This week on Rockett Labs: Managing Your Athlete, we’re joined by CrossFit affiliate owner and co-host of , Matt Souza (). We discuss a fascinating topic: ligamentous laxity. Ever heard of it? 🤔

🩺 Dr. Rockett’s Insight: Ligamentous laxity, or being 'double-jointed,' means having looser ligaments, which can increase flexibility but also the risk of joint injuries. It’s crucial for athletes with this condition to focus on strengthening exercises to support their joints and prevent injuries.

Whether you’re coaching or training with this condition, understanding how to manage it can significantly enhance athletic performance and prevent downtime due to injuries.

Welcome back to ""Rockett Science: Anatomy 101"" with me, Dr. Sean Rockett! 🩺

In today’s episode, we’re tackling the treatment options for a SLAP tear, a common shoulder injury that can really disrupt your daily activities and fitness routines.

Initial Treatment Approach:
The first line of defense against a SLAP tear is always conservative treatment. This means:

Taking it easy: Avoid activities that aggravate the shoulder.
Rest: Give your shoulder the downtime it needs to begin the healing process.
Modify your activities: Adjust your workout and daily routines to reduce stress on your shoulder.
Physical Therapy: Engaging in targeted exercises to strengthen the shoulder and improve flexibility can be immensely helpful.

However, if you've been following all these measures for 4-6 months and still experience significant discomfort—enough to disturb your sleep and daily functioning—then it might be time to consider a more definitive solution.

Surgical Option - Biceps Tenodesis:
If conservative treatments don’t bring the relief you need, biceps tenodenesis is a surgical option to consider. This procedure involves reattaching the biceps tendon to a new location, which can alleviate pain and improve the function of your shoulder.

Remember, the goal is to return you to your normal activities with minimal discomfort. If you’re facing ongoing shoulder issues, don’t hesitate to seek a detailed evaluation and discuss whether surgery might be the right path for you.

This week on Rockett Science: Managing Your Athlete, we address a common coaching challenge brought up by Joe—how to effectively support athletes with limited range of motion in their shoulder joints.

🔍 Joe's Question: "In your opinion, what is the most important thing a coach can do to support an athlete with restricted shoulder mobility?"

🩺 Dr. Rockett’s Response: "The first step is to ensure the athlete has a proper diagnosis. Understanding the underlying cause is crucial. For athletes, particularly those with arthritis who cannot raise their arm overhead, modifying exercises is essential. Continuously work on flexibility but adjust the intensity and range of motion to accommodate their capabilities without exacerbating the issue."

🏋️‍♂️ Coaching Tips: Modification doesn't mean limitation. It's about adapting techniques to meet athletes where they are while still pushing them towards their fitness goals safely and effectively.

Today on Rockett Science: Office Hours, we're diving into a hot topic in the fitness community: Do butterfly pull-ups cause injury?

🔍 Question of the Day: ""Do butterfly pull-ups cause injury?""

🩺 Dr. Rockett’s Insight: Butterfly pull-ups, when performed correctly by someone who is well-prepared physically, do not necessarily lead to injury. If you're strong enough, proficient in the technique, and not experiencing pain during the exercise, then it's likely safe to continue. However, it's crucial to build up the necessary strength and technique gradually to avoid stress on the shoulders and other parts of the body.

🗨️ What are your thoughts on butterfly pull-ups? Have they been a part of your workout routine? Share your experiences and any tips you have for performing them safely!

This week on Rockett Labs: Managing Your Athlete, I'm taking a moment to share a personal challenge that I’ve turned into a strength.

🔍 Personal Insight: Many don't know this, but I had my labrum removed when I was younger. This has led me to adapt my workout routines to fit my physical capabilities. One key adaptation I’ve made is opting for underhanded chin-ups instead of the traditional form.

🗨️ Why It Matters: This adjustment allows me to continue exercising and meeting my fitness goals without compromising the health of my shoulder.

🎥 Tune in as I discuss how understanding and modifying exercises can help you or your athletes continue to train effectively, despite physical limitations. It’s all about finding what works for you while ensuring safety and effectiveness.

Welcome back to "Rockett Science: Anatomy 101" with Dr. Sean Rockett!

Today, we're diving deep into a common but often misunderstood shoulder injury: SLAP Tears. SLAP stands for Superior Labrum Anterior to Posterior. This type of injury involves the area where the bicep tendon attaches to the shoulder, affecting the ring of cartilage, known as the labrum, that surrounds the shoulder socket.

Symptoms of a SLAP Tear:

--Pain deep inside the shoulder
--Difficulty lifting objects
--A sensation of locking, popping, or grinding
--Decrease in range of motion
--Strength loss in the shoulder

SLAP tears can be particularly troubling due to their location and the crucial role the labrum plays in stabilizing the shoulder. They can result from acute trauma like a fall or repetitive overhead actions, making them common in athletes and individuals with physically demanding jobs.

In our next sessions, we'll discuss how SLAP tears are diagnosed, various treatment options ranging from physical therapy to surgery, and strategies to prevent this injury in your daily activities and sports.

Welcome back to "Rockett Science: Anatomy 101" with me, Dr. Sean Rockett! 🩺🏋️‍♂️

Today’s topic: Tendonitis – a common issue for gym-goers. Tendonitis happens when you overdo it, leading to weakening and small tears in your tendons. If ignored, it can get worse over time.

⚠️ What to Look Out For: Beware of pain during your workout, immediately after, or the next day. These are signs that your tendons might be in trouble.

But don’t worry! You don’t need to stop all activities. The key is to modify your routine and manage the pain wisely. Remember the Rockett Rules of 3:
1. No pain while training
2. No pain after training
3. No pain the next day

By following these rules, you can stay active and healthy without risking further injury. Listen to your body and make adjustments to keep your workouts safe and effective. https://youtube.com/shorts/3rXhs06ah98?si=nUz5Cp7AAiEx3rbA
