A coup–contrecoup injury happens when the brain is injured in two places, not one.
During a crash or sudden impact:
👉 The brain hits the skull on the side of impact (coup)
👉 Then rebounds and hits the opposite side (contrecoup)
That means damage can occur even if there was no direct blow to the head. This type of injury is common in car accidents, whiplash injuries, and sudden deceleration events.
Symptoms don’t always show up right away — headaches, dizziness, concentration issues, and neck pain can be delayed.
At San Diego Auto Injury Center, we take head and neck trauma seriously and evaluate beyond what’s immediately obvious.
