Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) has notified every state that November funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the nation's largest anti-hunger program, will not be issued at this time.
Nationwide, approximately 42 million individuals receive SNAP benefits, including 360,000 in Connecticut. In total, nearly 1 in 10 people in Connecticut receive SNAP benefits.
The Connecticut Department of Social Services (DSS) is keeping a close eye on the federal government shutdown.
Here’s what we want you to know:
If the federal shutdown keeps going, SNAP benefits for November will not be sent out.
If the federal shutdown continues past Oct. 31, SNAP recipients may not be able to use any SNAP benefits left over from previous months until the federal government reopens.
November federal SNAP benefits cannot be issued until the federal shutdown ends or new guidance is provided by FNS.
At this time, SNAP benefits already loaded onto EBT cards remain available for use to purchase food through Oct. 31.
We are working closely with Governor Lamont’s Office and federal partners.
DSS will share updates as soon as we know more.
