A sensory-motor approach is a DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE way to introduce handwriting skills to preschoolers.
What exactly is a sensory-motor approach? A sensory motor approach uses a child's senses (smell, touch, vision, hearing, and proprioception (knowing where your body is in space) to engage a child and help them develop their motor skills. The more a child engages, explores, and attends to an activity, the more likely they will develop new brain connections. These connections are vital for continued brain growth and development.
Moral of the story, make motor development FUN for preschoolers. Most preschoolers are not ready to hold a pencil and begin writing (and some kids aren't ready until closer to age 6). So in the meantime, let them explore new materials. Create obstacle courses. Let them play with glue and scissors and create their own projects. Encourage playing with play dough, shaving cream, dry or wet noodles, or finger paint. Let them go outside and splash in mud puddles, climb, jump over things, go on a nature walk where you LET THEM TOUCH items, make leaf piles, go barefoot... the options are endless for sensory exploration... LET THEM GET DIRTY!!
Ditch the pencils and paper, and let your preschoolers go outside, explore, and maybe even grab a stick!
