The Gogli
I must talk about these special neurons at least 3-4 times a day with patients when teaching them the importance of stretching.
The ‘let go’ is what you feel after 15 plus seconds of a stretch when you feel the muscle automatically release. This is when a true stretch is in effect and why I say ‘hold the stretch for at least 20seconds plus’ otherwise you are wasting your time.
The sensory neurons found in a tendon are called "Golgi tendon organ" neurons; specifically, they are classified as "Ib afferent fibers" and are responsible for detecting muscle tension by sending signals to the spinal cord when a muscle contracts too forcefully.
Key points about Golgi tendon organ neurons:
Function: They monitor muscle tension and trigger a reflex to relax the muscle when excessive force is detected.
Location: Located at the junction between the muscle and tendon.
Nerve fiber type: Classified as "Ib afferent fibers".
