Info: Speech therapy helps others to communicate better. The clients can be infants up to the elderly. Language: Expressive Communication = This can be expressing ideas, requesting, reporting something, answering a question, etc. via eye gaze, gestures, sign language, sounds, words, phrases or sentences. It can also be helping others to understand instructions or requests made by others to them better. (Ex: Put this in the box, Come here). that is Receptive Communication. Speech refers to articulation: If a person is not articulating well...not formed well with the tongue, jaw, teeth, etc....sounds missing or substituted or added...speaking with a heavy accent that hinders others from understanding...the therapist can teach the person how to make sounds correctly and how to include all sounds correctly. When working at a hospital one may see patients after stroke and must test speech and language skills as well as swallowing skills. There may be impairment of recollection of words, or ability to control the mouth correctly to form words well, as well as swallowing difficulties or forming sentences correctly. There may be impairments in writing and reading (these are other forms of communication. Some people have difficulties with the voice: not loud enough, too hoarse, too high in tone, too low in tone. There are many things to consider in speech therapy. I work with children who are younger than 3 years old. I train their parents how to play with the children in certain ways that help their speech and language progress. It is called Early Intervention in the USA.
