Duff was presented to Otoe County, Nebraska as "Duff Memorial Nursing Home" in 1948. (This is the house directly connected to our building to the east. Christopher and Ann (McNulty) Duff came to America from Dublin County, Ireland in 1835. Son Nicholas Duff came west to Nebraska City in 1885. His younger brother, Michael Duff joined him in 1888. Together they started the "Duff Grain Company" with
a line of 75 grain elevators extending westward into Nebraska. Michael Duff married Mary Odell. They had three children; Edwin, Reba, and Phillip. Edwin served as President of the "Duff Grain Company" following the death of his father until it dissolved in 1934. Edwin married Gertrude Musser. They had two children; Richard and Marjorie. The gift of the residence was made by Richard Duff, Marjorie Duff Custer, and Edwin's brother Phillip Duff with the stipulation that it be used as a home for the elderly. Initially, the house served as a nursing home for 20 residents. In 1967, a new wing was added to the west. Which added a new kitchen, dining area, and 12 beds. In 1974 yet another wing was added bringing capacity to 63 beds. A special thanks to the Duff family whose generous gift continues to serve Otoe County. Not only does it provide housing for those needing nursing care, but it also provides employment in the community.
