Those “knots” you feel? They’re not hunks of muscle to be smashed apart. They’re part of a conversation your nervous system is having with the rest of your body.
Massage therapy works through that nervous system dialogue in two fascinating ways:
✨ Gate Control Theory: Your spinal cord acts like a “control center” for sensation. Non-painful touch (like slow, steady massage) can “close the gate” to pain signals by activating large, fast A-beta nerve fibers. This helps reduce the brain’s perception of pain (like when you rub your elbow after bumping it.)
✨ DNIC Response: For some clients, firm or deep pressure can trigger a “pain inhibits pain” effect. This engages your body’s built-in pain-relief systems, allowing tension to melt and relief to spread.
Both mechanisms are about communication!!!! Not destruction. Skilled touch helps your body feel safe, interrupts pain messages, and invites the whole system to reset.
Massage isn’t about “breaking you down.” It’s about helping your brain, nerves, and muscles work together again.
