The Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) is a comprehensive healthcare program for the spouse, widow(er) and children of disabled and deceased Veterans. The program covers most medically necessary healthcare services. This includes ambulance transport, durable medical equipment, maternity, hospice, skilled nursing care and mental health services.

Maxim Healthcare Services can help with two CHAMPVA-covered services – home healthcare and skilled nursing care.

Home healthcare is intermittent skilled-level home care for homebound patients provided by registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs) or licensed vocational nurses (LVNs).
Skilled nursing care is more intensive and can be administered by a nurse, ABA therapist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, respiratory therapist or social worker. Depending on the patient's needs, care can take place in the home or a rehab facility. CHAMPVA will cover skilled nursing care up to 24 hours a day, seven days a week as deemed necessary by a medical provider.
Healthcare providers who accept these assignments must accept the CHAMPVA allowable amount as full payment and may not charge you beyond your co-pay.

Maxim's trained and certified nurses are equipped to care for adults and children with a wide range of chronic and acute illnesses and disabilities. We partner with physicians and service providers to create comprehensive care plans tailored to the patient's needs. Last year, our team provided over 800,000 hours of care to VA-funded patients.

"How do I become a PDN?"

1️⃣ Get a nursing degree. You’ll need to earn your LPN certificate, associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree in nursing to become a private duty nurse.

2️⃣ Pass the NCLEX exam. There may also be other licensing requirements specific to your state.

3️⃣ Gain experience. Whether you gain clinical experience while you’re getting your degree or after you pass the NCLEX exam, it’s important to get familiar working with patients in a variety of settings.

4️⃣ Earn additional certifications (optional). While there are no PDN-specific certifications required for this field, additional training and knowledge can be helpful.

Nurses working in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and clinics report facing various challenges in their daily work. According to NPR, burnout levels are very high, especially among nurses and medical assistants who were on the front lines of care during the COVID-19 crisis, and are compounded by short-staffing and unmanageable workloads.

While burnout is generally thought of as fatigue, the World Health Organization (WHO) defines burnout as a syndrome resulting from workplace stress that has not been managed successfully. Sufferers have feelings of exhaustion, negative or cynical feelings towards their jobs, and reduced professional efficacy.

Increasing burnout levels have even affected nursing students’ perception of the profession. A 2021 survey of 571 nursing students and nurses conducted by Cross Country Healthcare and Florida Atlantic University's Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing showed that 2/3 of respondents shared some interest in leaving the profession. This was due to burnout (24%), insufficient nursing staff (17%), overwork and stress (13%), unsatisfactory pay or benefits (12%), and unsafe or unsatisfactory working conditions (7%).

For nurses who provide critical patient care, burnout can be dangerous. Ernest Grant, president of the American Nurses Association, told NPR, “It’s not good for their mental health; it’s not good for the work environment. There’s increased chance for mistakes, medication errors.”

If you are a nurse in a facility dealing with burnout or a nursing student concerned about entering the profession, home care nursing could be a great opportunity.

Home care nurses have more freedom and autonomy than traditional nursing roles. You’ll have the flexibility to choose your schedule and work with one patient on a long-term basis or multiple patients. Home care nurses also have a chance to focus on a holistic, targeted approach to patient care. It can also be an entry-level job, so as long as you have the proper education and credentials – home care can be a great way to jumpstart your career.

As a parent or guardian of a child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis, you have probably heard reference to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).

In 1952, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) created the first edition of the DSM, which served as the first official manual of mental disorders for clinical use.

What has changed in the DSM-5?

Every few years, the APA revises the DSM. The DSM-5, released in 2013, is the current main guide for mental health providers in the U.S., and it provides standards for making autism diagnoses. This version shows some changes in the way experts diagnose autism compared to the previous version.

Under the DSM-IV autism diagnosis, doctors could diagnosis patients with four separate disorders: autism, Asperger’s disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, or pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified.

Due to inconsistent application of these separate diagnoses, the DSM-5 puts them all under the main diagnosis of autism. If your child previously received a categorized autism diagnosis, you should know that your healthcare provider could still indicate this diagnosis alongside the current DSM-5 standards for ASD.

The DSM-5 consolidated three categories of symptoms of autism into two.

There is also an addition of sensory issues as a symptom under the restricted/repetitive behavior category including hyper- or hypo-reactivity to sensory input.

The DSM-5 also specifies a new diagnosis, social communication disorder, for disabilities in social communication without restricted, repetitive behaviors.

This is a communication disorder, not an autism diagnosis. Some children who had previously received a diagnosis of PDD-NOS may now receive a diagnosis of social communication disorder. However, this would apply only to newly diagnosed people.

Navigating the financial aspects of healthcare can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to understanding how private duty nursing services are paid for.

With so many options, ranging from insurance companies and government programs to out-of-pocket payments, figuring out which route best suits your needs can take time and effort.

PDN care is tailored for the patient but can include:

1️⃣ Ventilator and tracheostomy care
2️⃣ G-tube care and management
3️⃣ TPN infusion
4️⃣ Diabetes, seizure or oxygen management
5️⃣ Medication and therapy administration
And much more

Now that you know that private duty nursing is an attractive option. You may wonder, “How much does it cost and how can I pay for it?”

Unfortunately, there is no set cost of PDN care. Although PDN is generally cheaper than hospital or nursing home stays – the cost depends on the hourly rate in your state and the type of care that you or your family member needs. PDN costs range from $27 an hour in North Dakota to $18 in Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee.

At Maxim, we accept several forms of payment for private duty nursing.
