It’s the last weekend of January 🎉
And honestly… January was long.

For this week’s Family Fun Friday, slow things down and cozy things up with a DIY Cocoa Bar Night. Set out cocoa, marshmallows, sprinkles, whipped cream—whatever feels fun and easy—and gather around the table.

While you sip, chat about:
• Favorite January moments
• What made you laugh
• Something you’re proud of
• What you’re hoping for in February

You’ll laugh, reflect, and reconnect and that’s a pretty perfect way to wrap up the first month of the year 💫

💬 Wise Words Wednesday: Follow Through, Out Loud

We often expect teens to manage timelines, motivation, and follow through… while quietly struggling with the same things ourselves.

Kids don’t just learn responsibility from rules they learn it by watching how we handle our own “I’ll do it later” moments.

When we say our process out loud, we teach them.

How to notice frustration without exploding

How to set limits with ourselves

How to follow through without shame

🗣️ Try saying things like this where your kids can hear you:

1️⃣ “I really don’t feel like doing this, but I know it’ll feel better once it’s done. I’m going to start with five minutes.”

2️⃣ “I keep pushing this off, so I’m going to set a boundary for myself, no scrolling until I finish it.”

3️⃣ “I didn’t get to it earlier like I planned. That’s frustrating, but I can still take care of it now.”

No drama. No self-criticism. Just honest problem-solving.

💡 When kids hear us name the struggle and the plan, they learn that follow-through isn’t about perfection — it’s about awareness, choice, and consistency.

💬 Teen Tuesday: The “I’ll Do It Later” Timeline

“Later” is a very flexible concept in the teen brain.
Sometimes it means right before bedtime.
Sometimes it means after one more video.
And sometimes… it quietly disappears altogether. 😅

When you’ve asked a hundred times and nothing has happened, it’s normal to feel frustrated. That part matters, too.

Here’s the good news: there’s more than one helpful way to handle it and both can build responsibility.

💡 Tool #1: Collaborative Support
For kids who struggle with initiation or organization:
“Want help breaking this into a first step?”
or
“Let’s pick a time together so it doesn’t hang over you.”

This supports executive functioning without turning it into a power struggle.

💡 Tool #2: Calm, Clear Boundaries
For moments when support has already been offered:
“Hey, I asked you to get this done. Until it’s completed, there won’t be Wi-Fi access.”

No yelling. No lectures. Just information.

This approach:

Acknowledges your limit

Removes emotional back-and-forth

Puts the control back in their hands

Different kids and different days need different tools.
What matters most is staying calm, consistent, and clear.

I didn’t argue with the forecast.
I didn’t refresh the weather app 47 times.
I just accepted the chaos.

Snow day? Late start? Total mystery?
Cool. We’ll adapt.

This is growth. This is winter parenting. This is survival. ⛄🙌

💬 Wise Words Wednesday: Let Them See You Try

One of the most powerful lessons we can give our kids is letting them see us try, adjust, and sometimes get it wrong.

When we’re open about our own choices, what worked, what didn’t, and how we course-correct — kids learn that mistakes aren’t something to hide. They’re part of learning.

We don’t have to be perfect.
We just have to be honest and out loud.

Try saying things like:

• “I thought this would work, but it didn’t — so I’m going to try something else.”
• “I’m learning as I go too.”
• “That choice didn’t feel great, but now I know more for next time.”

These moments show kids that growth comes from curiosity, not shame.

✨ When kids see us give ourselves grace, they learn to do the same.

💬 Teen Tuesday: The Great Coat Debate 🧥

When kids are little, you make them wear a coat.
They complain… but they wear it.

Then suddenly they’re teens, and suggesting a coat feels like you’ve asked them to clean the house top to bottom. Why is the coat SUCH a big deal?! It’s cold!

Here’s the thing: as kids grow, sometimes the goal shifts from control to coaching.

With teens, it can be okay to compromise and let them make choices they might slightly regret — not to punish them, but to let them learn.

💡 A middle-ground approach:
They don’t have to wear the coat.
But can they put it in the car just in case?

No lectures.
No power struggles.
And if they later grab it on the way out?
Just a quiet smile. No “I told you so.”

✨ These small moments build decision-making skills, trust, and independence — while still keeping us close enough to guide them.

Sometimes it’s not really about the coat.
It’s about giving teens space to learn — with support nearby.

We know that seeking counseling for your child or teen can feel overwhelming — especially in the summer, when routines shift and stress can show up differently. Whether it’s social challenges, emotional regulation, or simply needing space to process life, our team is here to help.

We’re happy to share that we currently have summer openings for individual therapy in our Needham and Sudbury offices.
