The study that has been called the biggest change to the physiology of sudden cardiac arrest is now available. In this article, Dr. Johanna Moore and a team of researchers demonstrate that by using a distinct Neuroprotective CPR strategy (NCPR) that out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) survival rates can be increased almost 4X over conventional CPR methods (CCPR). This study is also groundbreaking in that they also found that previously non-shockable rhythms can also be treated resulting in a similar survival rate to hospital discharge. This is huge as most OHCA are in the non-shockable category.
The implication here is that basic life support (BLS), advanced life support (ALS) and hospital emergency rooms need to be reassessed in light of their technology and processes as they may not be achieving optimal results.
