🏠 January is Radon Action Month in Michigan 🏠

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can build up inside homes—and you can’t see it, smell it, or taste it. Long-term exposure to radon increases the risk of lung cancer and is the leading cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers.

The only way to know if radon is present in your home is to test.

👉 Good news: The Marquette County Health Department (MCHD) has FREE radon test kits available to the public through our Environmental Health (EH) program.

Winter is the ideal time to test, as homes are closed up and radon levels can be higher. Taking action now can help protect your health and your family’s health.

📞 Contact MCHD Environmental Health to get your free test kit:

Choosing Care, Compassion, and Connection 💙

As we welcome 2026, we carry forward the spirit of care, compassion, and connection that guided us through 2025. This past year brought encouraging progress through harm reduction efforts, helping reduce overdoses and protect lives.

Harm reduction is rooted in compassion—meeting people where they are and offering support, education, and resources without judgment. Every life matters, and small acts of care, whether checking in on someone, learning about local programs, or reaching out for help yourself, can make a meaningful difference.

Looking Out for Kids, Right from the Start 🧸💙

This year, our state took an important step forward to help protect children’s health right from the start.

Michigan now requires blood lead testing for all 1- and 2-year-olds, helping families identify potential exposure early—before it becomes a bigger concern.

This focus on early prevention gives kids the best chance to grow, learn, and thrive, and it’s one more way public health supports families here in Marquette County every day 💙

As we wrap up 2025, it’s inspiring to see how small steps in prevention can have a big impact on our community’s health—and set the foundation for a healthier year ahead.

Small Steps That Protect Our Littlest Residents 💤🍼

One of the ways we care for our littlest residents is by sharing trusted guidance on infant safe sleep.

Sharing simple, trusted guidance helps caregivers feel confident during those early mornings and late nights. Even small steps—like placing babies on their backs, in their own sleep space, and free of loose items—can make a big difference.

So as you tuck your little ones in tonight, remember that these simple steps help keep them safe.

At MCHD, we’re honored to support families in Marquette County by making safe sleep a priority and keeping our youngest residents safe 💙

🎄 Flu Season Is Here — Let’s Stay Healthy Together 🎄

Flu activity has increased significantly across Michigan, especially among school-aged children — and it’s happening earlier than usual this year.

The good news? 💙 Getting vaccinated is a safe, simple way to protect yourself and your loved ones this holiday season. It helps reduce the risk of serious illness, hospitalization, and missed time with family.

📅 Holiday Clinic Hours
Open today, Dec 23, until 5 p.m.!
We’ll be closed Dec 24–25 to celebrate the holidays and reopen Friday, Dec 26.

📞 We’d love to see you! Call (906) 475-7844 to schedule your vaccination.

A little prevention now can help keep gatherings merry, classrooms healthy, and winter days brighter. ✨

Something to Celebrate Together 💙👶

As we approach the holidays, it’s a wonderful time to celebrate the good happening in our community.

Michigan recorded its lowest infant mortality rate in history this year. That means more babies getting a healthy start and more families bringing their little ones home safely.

This progress comes from people across our communities who care deeply about families—from health providers and community partners to parents and caregivers themselves—including efforts to make safe sleep a priority.

We’re proud to be part of this work here in Marquette County, and it’s a reminder of what happens when our community looks out for one another 💙
