Don't dare come inside to sit for a minute. SOMEBODY will get up in your lap and not relax until you cover them up with the blanket. Then immediately start snoring.

If your dog ignores recall, the problem probably isn’t your dog.

If your dog ignores recall… it’s not disobedience. It’s honesty

?It truly doesn’t matter what word you use to call your dog back. Recall, come, here, cookies—pick your poison. What matters is that when your dog hears it, they want to stop in their tracks and come back to you.
You should be your dog’s safe place. Their security. Their comfort. Their home base.

So why do so many dogs “fail” at recall?

Because recall is one of the most overlooked life skills pet owners teach. We don’t practice it when it’s easy. We wait until we need it—then we panic, start yelling, repeating the word, getting frustrated or angry.
And honestly… would you want to run back to someone who sounds mad at you?

3 Tips to Build a Recall Your Dog Actually Wants to Respond To

1. Don’t poison the word
If your dog ignores you, stop repeating it. Every ignored cue weakens it. Say it once, then calmly go help them succeed. Protect that word like it matters—because it does.
2. Pay them like it’s worth it
Coming back to you should be the best option in the room. Food, toys, praise, freedom to go play again—use whatever your dog values most. Recall isn’t the place to be stingy.
3. Practice when you don’t need it
Call your dog when nothing exciting is happening. Call them just to reward and release them again. This teaches them that coming to you doesn’t always end the fun—it often adds to it.

Recall isn’t about control.
It’s about relationship.
And dogs always come back to what feels safe.

Training Tip Tuesday

If every time you say your dog’s name it’s followed by
no, stop, get back here, or frustration…
you’ve accidentally taught them this:

👉 My name means trouble.
It has been paired with negative tones.

Your dog’s name is not a recall.

It’s not a correction.

It’s a check-in cue.

Their name should mean:
‘Hey, look at me, pay attention—something good might happen.’

If your dog ignores their name, they’re not being stubborn.

They’re responding to what you taught the name to predict.
Want better focus?
Fix the name first.
Say it → they look → reward. Don't be afraid to be super excited. Make your dog wonder what you are doing.

Once their name brings excitement to look at you and check in then add what you want them to do.

Simple. Powerful. Game-changing.

Awww sweet Nomad Nico & Pinecone Pax are heading back to Haven of the Ozarks Animal Sanctuary . They are already missed. But even short term fostering can help. How? Great question.

A few days out of the shelter lowers stress. It allows cortisol levels to drop, helping the dog emotionally and physically reset.

Home time shows us who the dog really is — not who they are in survival mode.

Even short fosters make dogs more adoptable. Info matters. Do they like learning, are they fearful or excited about things that happen in a home environment, etc

Confidence grows fast when a dog finally gets to exhale. Positive human interaction, structure, and calm exposure — even briefly — can increase a dog’s confidence when they return.

One short foster = space saved for the next dog who needs help.

Nico & Pax from Haven of the Ozarks Animal Sanctuary .
They are so cute. Fighting sleep worse than toddlers.
They have been such wonderful guests and I hope they enjoyed their time with us here.
If you or anyone you know is looking for a smart, sweet loving addition to the family these guys should be at the top of the list.
A little about them. Both have not totally learned that everything should not go in the mouth. They do respond quickly to a simple verbal correction. Pax is a bit more nervous than Nico but he loves to learn. Nico loses interest faster but once he gets it it's solid.
They both respond well to come although we didn't get to work on it too much with all the snow. They will both wait at the door but will definitely need reminding until it's solid. Both will go to "kennel" with just maybe a couple of verbal requests. Nico is quicker than Pax.
The only real downside would be their lack of understanding of spatial awareness...oh wait, that just the young pup still in them.
If they are happy they want to share it with you.
