It looks like our first shoveable and plowable snowfall of the season may be just around the corner. Here are some tips to keep in mind when shoveling snow to help prevent back injury.

Ergonomic Snow Shovels: Snow shovels with a curved handle (or adjustable length) can help minimize bending. When looking for a snow shovel think about the weight of the shovel. A lighter weight snow shovel reduces the overall weight you’re lifting.

Take Your Time: Don’t try to run out and shovel a large area all at once. Take an occasional break. Remember that tight muscles are more prone to injury, so warm up before shoveling.

Technique Matters: When shoveling snow be sure to bend at the hips and knees, not the back. Push your chest out to help keep your back straight. When lifting/throwing snow avoid twisting. When throwing heavy snow keep one hand as close to the blade of the shovel as possible.
