Much of what we have feared and warned about all week is coming true tonight, unfortunately. These maps represent power outages in just two of our service counties - Tishomingo and Alcorn in Mississippi. You can see that large numbers of people are without power during this unprecedented weather event, and the weather tonight and tomorrow will only bring more hardship. Please, please, please check on your neighbors and family members, especially those on medical equipment like oxygen or ventilators.

Our service area is too broad to list every warming center that is open, but a quick search of social media will tell you about churches, town halls, and community centers that are offering a warm cot and electricity. If you need these tonight, please find a safe way to get there. If you can manage until tomorrow, perhaps the roads will improve by then. And of course, if you’re in medical distress, call 911 and pray they can get to you in time. The roads are impossible tonight.

Say a prayer for your local electrical linemen tonight, because their job will be the most difficult job out there. May God’s hand keep them safe as they serve our communities!

Please be aware that all of our Quipt Home Medical locations in West Tennessee and North Mississippi will this weekend experience a severe ice storm that will likely disrupt telephone, internet and power to each of our locations. Telephone calls will route to our answering service, which will then route calls to our staff, assuming that cell phone service is operational. However, roads are forecasted to become impassible, so our ability to drive and service needs in the field will also be restricted at some point during the weekend. As with any medical emergency, if you find yourself in distress, please dial 911. Our stores will open when power is restored and our drivers will get on the road when they become safe. If you need to, please find a warming center in your community where you can plug in equipment and stay warm.

We have been assisting patients to prepare all week, and we are busy doing that again today. After this afternoon, though, you will need to have an emergency plan in place for a prolonged power outage. Please, please plan accordingly.

We hope for the best for us all this weekend, and our prayer is for warmth and safety for everyone!

Forecasters are pretty confident in their expectation of a major winter weather event beginning in our area Friday of this week - likely involving both snow and unfortunately, ice. As with all winter weather events, we want to advise our friends and patients to have a plan for contingencies:

1. Oxygen concentrators, CPAP’s and other respiratory equipment require electricity to work. In the event of a long-term power outage, have a plan for power needs. Make sure your backup tanks are full, and swap them if you need to.

2. If you experience a medical emergency, always contact 911.

3. Charge all of your cell phone and other electrical devices and put fresh batteries in flashlights well in advance of the storm’s onset.

4. Make arrangements for pets to keep them warm, and check on your neighbors this weekend.

5. If you can’t get down your road safely, it’s likely that your nurse or our drivers won’t be able to either. Be safe, we will be too, and our delivery technicians will hit hit the roads as soon as it is safe to do so.
