The sunshine is returning and so are Spring sports! Kiddos across the country are preparing for baseball, softball, soccer, tennis, and track! Does your child have a current sports physical? "For IHSAA sports in Indiana, student-athletes require a pre-participation physical examination (PPE) between April 1st and their first practice, conducted by a qualified physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant, using the current IHSAA PPE form."

Yesterday the KY Dept of Public Health announced Kentucky's first case of measles this year, in Franklin County. There have now been over 120 cases in Texas and New Mexico, and yesterday the death of an unvaccinated child was reported. Measles is one of the most contagious infectious diseases known. An unvaccinated person will have an approximately 90% chance of acquiring the disease if in close contact with someone who has measles. Many children are admitted to the hospital, most due to pneumonia or dehydration. The good news is that the measles vaccine given at 12 months of age provides 93% immunity, and the booster given at 4 years increases the immunity to 97%. The vaccine is safe and effective and is the best protection for these outbreaks. As Spring arrives and traveling increases there will likely be more cases closer to home. If your child is due for the first or second measles vaccine please get them vaccinated as soon as possible as it is the best protection for them and the community.
