This month we were proud to host an Atos Community Event that brought together laryngectomy patients from across Pennsylvania — including those supported by Penn State Hershey Medical Center and other local health systems.

It was inspiring to see a room full of individuals in different stages of their journeys, each thriving in their own way. Attendees represented all three post-laryngectomy methods of communication: esophageal speech, electrolarynx, and voice prosthesis.

✨ A highlight moment came from patient Lori Gay, who shared her “One Life” initiative. Partnering with Dr. Neerav Goyal (PSUHMC) and Senator Mike Regan, she is advocating for education and resources to help first responders and ambulance services support neck breathers in emergency situations.
We were also joined by Atos Ambassador Steven Cooper, who demonstrated the FreeHands device and spoke about the importance of skin care and achieving a secure adhesive seal.

👏 A special thank you to Veteran John Kanter and all of the patients who attended, your resilience, community, and willingness to share are what make these events so meaningful.

🌬️ Breathing through a stoma? You’re not alone—and you’re not without options.

After a laryngectomy, your lungs are no longer connected to your nose and mouth. Because of this, they miss out on the warmth and moisture that your nose and mouth used to provide. This can lead to more coughing, mucus, and fatigue, but it doesn’t have to stay that way.

Our page on Breathing After a Laryngectomy explains how you can protect your lungs, reduce mucus, and feel better with a small but powerful device: the Heat and Moisture Exchanger (HME).

💡 Learn how it works, why it matters, and how to find the right one for you:
