- Rule of thumb: When replying to others - especially those with whom you disagree imagine you're having a face-to-face conversation, and ponder how differently you would interact with those people while in the same room, looking each other in the eye, as opposed to a few miles away.

2. Relevance:
- Ensure that your comments are relevant to Community members. We encourage you to keep your post as close to the subject as possible, and redirect anyone attempting to change the conversation.

3. Links:
- Before posting links to outside websites and videos, please take a moment to scan the page and see if someone else has already posted a link to the same page/topic and/or video. In addition, ensure any links posted do not violate any “Netiquette” rules within this document.

UPDATE-CRAVEN COUNTY SCHOOLS WILL OPERATE ON A REMOTE DAY

12/23/2023

Posting this for our neighbor Kim whose dog was hit at the end of their driveway last night. She's not on this page.

"Thank you to the young man who stopped to help me when Ruffin was hit last night. He is going to be ok, he has a broken leg and may require surgery, but we feel very blessed that he is still with us. I want to let that young man know how very much I appreciate him- He was VERY kind! I also would like to say that the 25-35 mph speed limit stretches the ENTIRE length of Old Airport Road. Our children's and our animal's lives are at stake when others drive so recklessly! PLEASE be cautious!! Our road situation is only going to get worse!! We need to pull together and protect each other!"

Join us for an in-person community meeting on the evening of Thursday, April 27th, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. at Creekside Elementary School. The school is located at 2790 Landscape Drive in New Bern. This meeting will also be hosted virtually on Facebook Live at https://fb.me/e/5RL×GOdUi

Note:

There have been an overabundance of offers from the public regarding donations to the fire efforts. We are extremely grateful to the community for the support shown to firefighters.

We currently do not have the capacity for processing and storing donations on site. In lieu of donations to the Great Lakes Fire incident, we ask that you consider making a monetary donation to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.

Great Lakes Fire:

The Great Lakes Fire, located within Croatan National Forest, one mile South-Southeast of New Bern, started on April 19th. The cause of the fire is under investigation It is burning in pocosin swamp and mixed fuels. The fire is burning within the imprint of the 2012 Dad Fire, which burned roughly 21,331 acres. No structures have been lost and none are currently threatened.

Acreage: 32,400 acres
Containment: 30%
Personnel and Equipment: 184 total personnel; 4 Helicopters, 15 Type-6 Engines, 22 Type-2 Tractor Plow Units, 1 Fixed Wing Aircraft, and 1 tracked vehicle.

Today:

Crews worked today to continue strengthening containment lines and monitoring the fire perimeter for smoke. Reconnaissance flights took place to look for heat signatures within the fire interior. No visible smoke was seen throughout much of the fire imprint with the exception of the fire burning in the organic soils in the southeast portion of the fire. The 8-acre spot fire showed no growth today, and firefighters continued to mop up any smoldering pockets within the interior. As indicated by Incident Commander Trainee Shane Hardee during the morning briefing, "if we don't make plans for the 'what if factor, this fire could wake up down the road, so we need to plan and prepare for what could be if the fire conditions change two, three, four weeks from now".

Weather and Fire Behavior:

Sunny skies and drying conditions were predominant today, but no intensification of the wildfire was identified. "The fire is not currently burning laterally, but vertically down into the soil", noted Operations Section trainee Shawn Nagle. Due to the organic nature of pocosin fuels, heat from the fire may not be seen in the form of smoke or flames on the surface but can be picked up from infrared scanning on reconnaissance flights a few feet below the surface of the ground.

Air quality: Information on current air quality data for North Carolina can be found at https://www.airnow.gov/.

Closures:

Road closures on County Line Road and Catfish Lake Road remain in effect. Updates to road closures surrounding the fire can be found at https://drivenc.gov/.

Temporary Flight Restriction:

A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) remains in place over the fire area; information can be found at Federal Aviation Administration website. This is necessary to protect aerial operations. If there are intrusions into the Temporary Flight Restrictions, we must stop aerial operations.

🔥🔥 FIRE INFORMATION UPDATE: GREAT LAKES FIRE (Craven and Jones counties) 🔥🔥

Fire crews are working to establish containment lines around the Great Lakes Fire on the Croatan National Forest in Craven and Jones counties. The fire was first detected Wednesday evening with units responding and attempting to put in containment lines around the estimated 50-acre fire. Dry windy conditions Thursday contributed to rapid fire growth.

The fire’s current size is estimated at 35,000 acres with 10% containment. Primary and secondary containment lines are being established on the eastern, southern and western sides of the fire. An emphasis is being placed on protecting private lands to the north.

Southerly winds are expected to continue through Saturday evening. Communities to the north of Croatan National Forest can expect smoke impacts to continue.

Additional ground and aerial resources have been called up to assist in fighting the Great Lakes Fire. The Southern Area Red Team, a Type 1 Incident Management Team, is due to arrive Sunday. The fire will enter unified command between the U.S. Forest Service and N.C. Forest Service.

Hi Neighbors... Management Services and the BOD will be gathering some demographic information for our area soon to assist in things such as event planning, neighborhood watch, and emergency response. This information will likely be collected via email survey and/or online survey, so keep an eye out and please respond appropriately. The information will be strictly demographic data such as the number of kids, adults, and ages. No personal information will be collected outside of what is already provided to the HOA. Demographic data is a vital resource that will greatly enhance the Association's ability to appropriately and responsibly allocate time and funds for things important to our Community; your input and assistance are greatly appreciated.

I'm reading the recycling info that tomorrow is a regular pick up vs. a holiday. Anybody have different info?

12/28/2022

Yes, we'll get rid of your Christmas tree for you!

For city customers: we will pick up your discarded organic & artificial Christmas trees. Place them curbside & our bulk waste crews will pick them up. We'll dispose of the artificial ones & recycle the organic ones at our leaf & limb yard (please make sure all decor & lights have been removed first).
