People often ask me, how can you help people through trauma? It has to be hard? Is it hard? And the short answer is YES! Many days I walk away frustrated, sad, and angry for a client for what they have experienced. Sometimes I can’t stop thinking about the person and what they went through!
But I also get to know a person at their deepest, most vulnerable core, as they work through a scary time (or more than one time in some cases) and I get to experience their breakthroughs and their progress! I get to see their laughs, smiles and sense of accomplishments when they know and feel like they are in charge of their life and not their trauma!
Many times I help a client, especially kiddos, do this by doing a “trauma narrative” which is a “psychological technique used to help individuals who have experienced trauma make sense of their experiences….. the primary goal of creating a trauma narrative is to help individuals process and integrate their traumatic experiences, reducing the associated distress and promoting healing”.
