📋 Understanding the Medical Referral Process
🏥 New Boston Family Clinic
We often receive questions about referrals — why they are needed, why they sometimes take time, and why documentation matters. We want to help clarify the process for our patients!
🔎 Why are referrals required?
Many insurance plans require a referral from your Primary Care Provider (P*P) before seeing a specialist. This helps coordinate your care and ensures services are covered appropriately under your plan.
📝 Why is documentation so important?
Before a referral can be sent, we must have:
• A recent office visit discussing the concern
• Documented symptoms and history
• Physical exam findings
• Any required labs, imaging, or prior treatments tried
Specialists and insurance companies require this information to approve and schedule your appointment. Without proper documentation, referrals can be delayed or denied.
⏳ Why might it take time?
Referral coordinators must:
• Verify insurance requirements
• Obtain prior authorizations (if required)
• Send complete medical records
• Confirm specialist availability
Our goal is always to make this process as smooth and timely as possible while ensuring everything is done correctly the first time.
💙 We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to coordinate the best care for you.
If you believe you need a referral, please schedule an appointment so we can properly evaluate and document your concern.
