Su***de is the 11th cause of death in the United States. In 2023, 49,316 people died by su***de, one of the highest numbers ever recorded. Men are nearly four times more likely to die by su***de than women. Some groups face even higher risk, including American Indian and Alaska Native men and men over age 75. Fi****ms were the most common method, involved in more than half of all su***de deaths. Millions of adults think about or attempt su***de each year, and nearly half of Americans say they know someone who has died this way.
Even though these statistics from the CDC and the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention are daunting, su***de is preventable. Talking openly about mental health, checking in on friends and family, and encouraging people to seek help can save lives. Small actions like listening without judgment, offering support, and helping someone connect to resources can make a big difference. Communities, schools, workplaces, and families all play a role in creating hope and reducing risk.
If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available right now. In the United States, you can call or text 988 to connect with the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline 24/7. Veterans can press “1” after dialing 988 to connect with the Veterans Crisis Line. You can also use the Lifeline’s chat option at 988lifeline.org. For young people, the Trevor Project (866-488-7386 or text START to 678-678) offers 24/7 support for LGBTQIA+ youth.
Please visit the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention website (also.org) for more information about where to volunteer or how to help increase awareness. If you are struggling, please reach out to us, a friend, a professional, or anyone you trust. Help is available, sometimes the hardest and most important part is asking for it. You are never alone.
