I'm excited to announce the Motor Speech Master Series, a comprehensive two-day virtual workshop hosted by TalkTools is back! This series is designed for speech-language pathologists and other professionals seeking to enhance their skills in diagnosing and treating motor speech disorders.

Day 1: Identifying and Assessing

Scheduled for April 4, 2025, from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern Time, this session focuses on evaluating and diagnosing motor speech disorders in children, including Childhood Dysarthria (CD), Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), and Oral-Motor Disorders (OMDs). The course begins with a self-study segment covering definitions, characteristics, and assessment tools. The live session delves into differential diagnosis, distinguishing motor speech disorders from other developmental speech sound disorders, and explores current research and treatment options. Additionally, I'll introduce my Sensory-Motor Approach for clients who may not respond to traditional speech production methods, focusing on key muscles for speech clarity, motor aspects of speech production, and functional goals for therapy.

Day 2: Vocalization to Communication

On April 5, 2025, from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern Time, the focus shifts to transitioning clients from vocalization to functional communication. This session addresses challenges faced by clients who struggle with imitating speech sounds or have limited verbal output. The course begins with a self-study segment covering topics such as why clients may have difficulty imitating speech sounds, the role of imitation in therapy, and strategies for eliciting phonation on command. The live session introduces the Oral Placement Approach, assesses speech from a systems perspective, and provides techniques for initiating therapy with non-verbal clients. Afternoon topics include using tools to facilitate phonetic shaping, sequencing sounds and syllables, and transitioning to other motor speech approaches.
