We're incredibly proud of Stephanie Y. Terauchi, M.D., FAAHPM, one of our dedicated palliative medicine physicians who recently founded My Final Wish, Inc. - a nonprofit that grants meaningful wishes to terminally ill adults to celebrate life and legacy.

Last month, Dr. Terauchi granted the organization's very first wish, sending Texas Oncology patient Kara and her husband Bill on an unforgettable trip to Kauai. From sunset cruises along the Na Pali Coast to helicopter tours and authentic luaus, every moment was filled with joy and precious memories.

This is the heart of what we do at Texas Oncology - caring for our patients extends far beyond treatment. We're honored to have physicians like Dr. Terauchi who go above and beyond to bring hope, joy, and meaningful experiences to those who need it most.

Summer's winding down, but there's still time to squeeze in that getaway! Having cancer doesn't mean missing out on travel adventures. Here are 6 essential tips for safe summer travel:

🩺 1. Check with Your Healthcare Team First
Schedule a quick consultation with your oncologist to determine the best travel timing based on your treatment schedule.

💊 2. Smart Medication Packing
- Pack ALL medications in carry-on luggage
- Bring extra doses for delays
- Keep meds in original containers
- Carry a doctor's letter explaining your medications

🏥 3. Research Medical Care at Your Destination
Save local medical contacts in your phone and know your insurance coverage for out-of-state care.

🧴 4. Extra Sun Protection
Cancer treatments increase sun sensitivity. Use SPF 30+ sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during peak hours (10 AM - 4 PM).

🥗 5. Stay Hydrated and Nourished
Drink plenty of water, pack healthy snacks, and be cautious with street food if immunocompromised.

😌 6. Build in Rest Time
Don't overpack your schedule. Listen to your body, plan shorter travel days, and remember—the goal is to enjoy yourself!

At Texas Oncology, we want you to live life to the fullest. Safe travels! 🌞

🌞 Stay Hydrated This Texas Summer for Better Digestive Health! 💧
The scorching Texas heat isn't just tough on your skin – it can significantly impact your digestive health too! Proper hydration is crucial for maintaining healthy bowel function and preventing constipation, which plays an important role in overall colon health.

💡 Hydration Tips for Optimal Digestive Health:
- Aim for 8-10 glasses of water daily – more if you're spending time outdoors
- Start your day with water before your morning coffee
- Set reminders to drink water throughout the day
- Monitor your urine color – pale yellow indicates good hydration

🍉 Hydrating Foods to Add to Your Summer Diet:
- Watermelon (92% water content) – perfect for hot days!
- Cucumbers (96% water) – great in salads or as snacks
- Zucchini, tomatoes, and leafy greens – all excellent water sources
- Soups and broths – count toward your daily fluid intake

⚠️ Signs of Dehydration Affecting Your Digestive System: When you're dehydrated, your body absorbs more water from your colon, making stools harder and more difficult to pass. This can lead to constipation, bloating, and discomfort.

"During these hot Texas summers, I often see patients whose digestive issues are directly related to inadequate hydration. Proper water intake is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to maintain healthy bowel function and support overall colon health. When we're dehydrated, our intestines work harder to absorb every drop of water, which can lead to constipation and other digestive complications."
— Brano Djenic, MD, FACS, FASCRS
Colon and Re**al Surgeon, Texas Colon & Re**al Specialists

Remember: Consistent hydration is key to preventing digestive issues before they start. If you're experiencing persistent constipation or other digestive concerns, don't hesitate to consult with a healthcare professional.

This July, we're raising awareness about sarcoma, a rare but serious form of cancer that develops in bones and connective tissues like muscle, fat, blood vessels, and cartilage.

Key Facts About Sarcoma:
• Approximately 15,000 new cases are diagnosed in the U.S. each year
• Represents less than 1% of all adult cancers, but 15% of childhood cancers
• There are over 70 different types of sarcoma
• More than half of soft tissue sarcomas begin in an arm or leg

Warning Signs to Watch For: ⚠️ A new lump or mass anywhere on the body ⚠️ A lump that is growing in size ⚠️ Persistent pain in bones or joints ⚠️ Swelling or tenderness in affected areas ⚠️ Reduced movement if the tumor is near a joint

Early detection saves lives. If you notice any persistent lumps, bumps, or pain that doesn't go away, don't wait – see your doctor.

At Texas Oncology, our expert team is here to provide comprehensive sarcoma care with advanced treatment options and compassionate support.

An important reminder about men’s health: TIME Magazine recently explored how realistic the prostate cancer storyline is on “And Just Like That,” featuring insights from Julia Willingham, M.D., a urologist at Texas Oncology.

Dr. Willingham helped explain the medical realities behind the TV drama: “Most early-stage prostate cancer has no symptoms at all… If you’re having urinary or sexual symptoms, go talk to your doctor, because these are things that we can handle and take care of.”

Prostate cancer affects more than 313,000 men annually in the U.S., but it’s highly treatable when caught early. Regular PSA screenings starting around age 50 can make all the difference.

06/25/2025

Uterine cancer is the most common gynecologic cancer in the United States. Understanding your risk factors is an important step in prevention and early detection. 💙

Key risk factors include:
• Age - Most cases occur after menopause, with the highest risk between ages 60-70
• Obesity - Excess weight increases estrogen levels, which can stimulate the uterine lining
• Diabetes - Often linked with obesity and hormonal changes
• Hormone therapy - Estrogen without progesterone increases risk
• Family history - Especially of uterine, ovarian, or colore**al cancers
• Never having been pregnant - Pregnancy reduces lifetime estrogen exposure
• Late menopause - More years of menstrual cycles mean more estrogen exposure
• PCOS - Polycystic o***y syndrome affects hormone balance

What you can do: ✅ Maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise ✅ Know your family history and share it with your doctor ✅ Report unusual bleeding, especially after menopause ✅ Stay current with regular gynecologic exams
Remember: Having risk factors doesn't mean you will develop cancer. Many women with risk factors never develop the disease, while others with no known risk factors do.

If you have concerns about your risk, please speak with your healthcare provider. Early detection saves lives.

Daniel White's journey reminds us that a lung cancer diagnosis doesn't define your future—access to leading-edge treatments and clinical trials can. Despite never smoking, Daniel was diagnosed with lung cancer in October 2024. Through a clinical trial with immunotherapy drug Keytruda, his tumors have shrunk by more than 50%.

"You're not alone, but make sure you get involved," Daniel advises others facing similar battles. His journey highlights the power of:

✅ Early detection and getting informed
✅ Access to innovative treatments through clinical trials
✅ Strong support systems

Melissa Crawley, M.D., from our Texas Oncology—San Antonio Medical Center clinic, says patients like Daniel who participate in clinical trials "help everybody"—advancing cancer care for future generations.

If you or a loved one is facing a cancer diagnosis, know that you have options. Clinical trials may provide access to the latest treatments that aren't yet widely available.
