You may have heard many of these “dental myths” online, from friends and family or well-meaning acquaintances. Ideas like “brushing harder is better” or that “no pain means your teeth are fine.”
In our latest blog post, Dr. Peck debunks some of these false, silly, or even downright dangerous myths to help you protect your smile - and your overall health! We have a quick summary below, but you can read the full post via the link in our bio!
1. As long as a food or drink is “sugar-free,” it isn’t bad for my teeth.
- Many sugar-free foods still contain acids that can damage teeth!
2. Bleeding gums aren’t a big deal.
- Healthy gums don’t bleed. You are either brushing too hard, not flossing enough, or have early-stage gingivitis or other health issues.
3. If my teeth don’t hurt, they are healthy.
- Many serious dental issues show no symptoms in their early stages. But by the time you feel pain, your issue may be more serious than if it were caught early.
4. Brushing harder is better.
- You can actually brush so hard that you damage your gums or wear down tooth enamel and root surfaces, causing tooth pain and sensitivity. Always use a soft toothbrush and a gentle, circular motion.
5. I can whiten my teeth at home just as well as a professional treatment (even with items from my pantry).
- Using lemon juice, baking soda, active charcoal, etc. to whiten your teeth can damage your enamel.
6. Dental x-rays are dangerous.
- Dental x-rays are safe and are very low in radiation. And the risk of avoiding x-rays can lead to undiagnosed dental issues.
7. You should avoid the dentist if you’re pregnant.
- Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are essential for maintaining healthy gums and avoiding potential infections. Cosmetic work can wait, but emergency dental care is necessary!
There is a lot of misinformation floating around about dental procedures, products, and proper oral care, so it’s important to get your info from trusted sources. Ask your dentist if you have specific questions about your dental health, and stay up-to-date on your cleanings and exams.
