Disheartened today.

I attended a public health event today that's topic was culinary medicine. I was thrilled that this topic was being spotlighted in the world of community health and bringing awareness in the importance of nutrition in preventative medicine.

Not one dietitian was there presenting. Not one. For culinary medicine. Nor were dietitians hardly mentioned as part of the available resources to the community.

I applaud the health care providers presenting today for bringing the importance of nutrition education to the public health spotlight. It takes an entire team approach and we all need to be involved - from the PCP visit down. But why not include THE profession that's entire lengthy education and experience is devoted to the latest nutritional science and INDIVIDUALIZING plans of care for those with multiple comorbidities, the experts in medical nutrition therapy, applying different cultural backgrounds, different mental health backgrounds, understand the treatment of disordered eating behaviors, and then apply behavior change therapy in the mix for actual sustainable change?

Who is at fault for RDs not getting invited to present at these events centered around nutrition? Well, I'm pointing a finger at myself. I think when it comes to our profession and what we can offer, and how accessible we are to the local community, RDs are not NEAR vocal enough. I know as RDs we get frustrated by CDR and the Academy for not advocating for our profession more, but if we want change to happen, RDs need to put themselves out there and not wait on anyone to come to our rescue. While I am a pretty quiet person, I spoke up today on what we do and how we play a part in public health. And I hope I didn't ruffle any feathers in doing so. If you are an RD, I encourage you to get out of your comfort zone and proudly shout from the rooftops on what we can offer and the differences we make in the community.

A statement was made in response at this event that dietitians are not very accessible to the public. I want to clear that up right now. RDs are the nutrition professional that can take insurance in Texas. And many do not realize this-many, many plans cover us, often 100%. Medicare included, if you have diabetes or kidney disease (we are working on getting more conditions covered at a national level). I do know of dietitians in our area that take Medicaid too. We are here to help.

I have also been told by doctors and other health care professionals that we are just old school "food pyramid" pushers, and are outdated. I want to also clear this up. Food pyramid is gone and dead. Like any medical professional, you are going to have good ones that stay up to date with the latest information and stand for the science, and you are going to have ones that aren't up to speed. I don't want this stereotype being a barrier in the patient-centered care we offer, and all the amazing breakthroughs in nutritional science we share to the public daily.

I also share this entire sentiment with the changes going on at a national level with RFK Jr. I applaud the focus on nutrition - it's needed. But they don't have one registered dietitian on their committee that I am aware of. Where are we going to steer people without the science and expertise? To me, it's like having someone that dabbles in medicine perform brain surgery. We are throwing darts at a problem and not hitting the target. Dietitians gotta step it up and get louder than the popular diet trends and fads and opinions (...and doctors that take an interest and write books...) that drown us out.

OK, off the soapbox now. :)

We see complications from supplement toxicity regularly. Get regular labs and always check with your MD or dietitian. It is scary what is out there on the shelves in the name of "health."

More than half of U.S. adults take supplements, hoping to boost metabolism, improve gut health, or even extend their lifespan. But with little regulation and minimal safety testing, some supplements are doing more harm than good. Over the past 25 years, liver injuries and even liver failure linked to supplement use have skyrocketed—often due to toxic ingredients, harmful drug interactions, and megadosing.

Our Story

I am a registered dietitian providing nutrition consulting services including private counseling, nutrition classes for the public and businesses, online nutrition courses, recipe analysis, and more. My hope is to spread credible nutrition information that works best for you, as no one diet approach fits all and there is a lot of terrible nutrition advice out there. I am also a mom of 2 littles, so I am all about practical, sustainable approaches to better health in our fast-paced lives. Check out our services and our blog for free recipes and nutrition tips at http://food4success.com
