๐ Administering the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales in Collaboration With Caregivers in a Virtual Environment: Reliability, Fidelity, and Lessons Learned
๐ Why this study matters
Telepractice interventions for social communication are increasingly common, but research on telepractice-based assessments for toddlers is still limited. This study explored whether the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales (CSBS) can be reliably administered in a virtual format with caregiver participation and coaching.
๐งช What they did
Researchers recruited 30 infant and toddler siblings of autistic children and their caregivers from an ongoing clinical trial. Families received CSBS assessment kits by mail and completed three virtual assessments over six months, with caregivers administering the activities while trained assessors coached them via telepractice. Sessions were recorded to evaluate caregiver fidelity, assessor coaching fidelity, and scoring reliability. Caregivers also provided feedback on the telepractice experience.
๐ Key findings
โข Caregiver implementation fidelity was high (95.61%)
โข Assessor coaching fidelity was strong (91.14%)
โข Interrater scoring reliability was robust (ICC = .85)
โข Caregivers reported generally positive experiences, though some noted challenges with maintaining engagement and adapting to the structured format.
๐ก Takeaway
Virtual administration of the CSBS appears to be a feasible and reliable approach for assessing early social communication, with the potential to improve access for families who face barriers to in-person services.
