At the Minnesota Clinic for Health and Wellness, we believe there’s no one right way for a brain to work. Neurodiversity is a concept that recognizes and acknowledges the wide spectrum of how human brains function. It includes people with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurodevelopmental differences— understanding that natural variations in thinking, processing, and experiencing the world are present for the folks we encounter every day.

🧘‍♀️ Ground Yourself with the 5-4-3-2-1 Technique

Feeling overwhelmed or anxious? Try this simple yet powerful grounding exercise to bring your attention back to the present moment.

Here’s how it works:

5 – Look around and name 5 things you can see. It could be a pen, a shadow, the sky, anything in your surroundings.
4 – Focus on 4 things you can physically feel. Your feet on the floor, your sweater on your skin, the chair you’re sitting on.
3 – Listen closely and name 3 things you can hear. A ticking clock, birds outside, the hum of a computer.
2 – Identify 2 things you can smell. If you can’t smell anything right away, consider a shift so that you can (coffee, lotion, fresh air).
1 – Finally, focus on 1 thing you can taste. Maybe a sip of water, mint, or just the taste in your mouth.

💡 This technique helps you reconnect with your body and environment when your thoughts feel scattered or stressful.

Cultivating Steadiness: A Journal Reflection

When life feels chaotic and uncertain, it can be hard to find your footing. Stressful seasons impact how we show up at work, how we care for our health, and how we connect in relationships. For parents and caregivers, staying grounded is especially important—but even more difficult when we ourselves feel off-balance.

Taking time to reflect can help us reconnect with what gives us strength and clarity. Use this journal prompt to explore where you are and what can help you feel more steady.

🌀 A Journal Prompt for Steadiness
Ask yourself:

▫️ Are there factors within me and/or outside of me contributing to feeling unsteady? If so, what are they?
▫️ What areas of my life are feeling most unsteady and wobbly?
▫️ What resources help me cultivate more steadiness in the meaningful areas of my life (health, family, community, work, etc.)?
▫️ What practices are a source of grounding and peace during times when things feel unstable, unfamiliar, or scary?
▫️ What ways of engaging within relationships and community help me feel steady so I can be a steadying presence for others?
▫️ To what extent am I focusing my attention on things outside of my control?
▫️ How can I orient my time, energy, and efforts to things that align with my values and are within my sphere of influence?

Steadiness doesn’t mean ignoring life’s storms—it means building habits, connections, and perspectives that help you weather them.
