Youssef Morad, M2 and Gabriela Cano, M2 have been named the 2025 recipients of the Ravi D. Goel, MD, Endowed Scholarship.

Dr. Goel, '97 is an opthamologist, who is an alum of the medical school. On his website Protecting Sight, he shares his story of putting himself through medical school with 100% financial aid, in addition to a few scholarships. He has since "paid it forward" by establishing awards for the Sigma Chi Foundation and to his alma mater. The first of the Rutgers awards was given in 2023.

"To celebrate my 50th birthday, I wanted to continue to pay forward the generosity of those who supported a 'financial aid kid' like me", says Dr. Goel. "I hope that the endowed scholarship at my med school alma mater will help ease the financial burden of a future medical student. Junior colleagues who dedicate their lives to moving medicine forward and protecting sight. Gabriela and Youssef are the fourth and fifth scholars to receive this award". The medical school showed kindness to our community by participating in school supply and T-shirt drives sponsored by the HIPHOP-Community Health Initiative. The "Back to School Donation Drive” collected new donated school supplies, including backpacks, notebooks, folders, pencils, pens, glue sticks, and crayons, for community-based organizations. The medical school also hosted a T-shirt drive for Elijah's Promise, New Brunswick. The Executive Team enjoyed packing the bags for students.

If you stop by the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine in the Clinical Academic Building (CAB) at 125 Patterson Street in New Brunswick, you'll see kindness overflowing in the décor, which helps to reinforce the "Be Kind" campaign year-round.

Keith P. Lewis, RPh, MD, vice dean of the medical school and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, initiated a "Be Kind" campaign that has made kindness a cornerstone of all patient and staff interactions and a core value within the RWJBarnabas Health system. The campaign is an initiative to foster a culture of kindness toward patients, learners, colleagues, and the community. The collaboration with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital resulted in the creation of KindOR™ and CareOR™, patient care plans that incorporate powerful yet simple acts of kindness—such as deep listening, a warm blanket, a gentle touch, and timely pain control. This campaign is celebrated on World Kindness Day across the medical school, hospital, and RWJBarnabas Health. The medical school was pleased to host the inaugural "On the Brink of Pink: Women's Health in the Workplace" symposium this week. The symposium took its theme from flamingos, which can temporarily lose their vibrant pink color in times of stress and when caring for their young, and encouraged normalizing discussions on and support for women's health issues.

Kicked off by Dr. Alopi Patel, associate professor of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, who spearheaded the event, the symposium featured discussions on a range of women's health issues, from menstruation to menopause. Highlights included a keynote by Dean Amy P. Murtha; panel discussions with faculty, staff, and residents from the medical school, Rutgers Health, and Rutgers School of Public Health, and Odette Perriel, vice president of support services at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and regional vice president of support services for the Southern Region at RWJBarnabas Health; as well as closing remarks from Dr. Keith P. Lewis, vice dean of the medical school and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. Our own medical students served as moderators for the panels and assisted with the planning and organization of the event.

Thanks to all the organizers, speakers and attendees for creating a robust and engaging discussion on these issues!
