When your child tells you they flew an airplane to daycare or preschool that morning, they are displaying imagination and creativity, creating mental images, ideas and concepts that don’t really exist.
Imagination is vital for your child’s intellectual and social development, improving problem-solving skills and growing social cognition - how they perceive and interpret the world.
You’ll see signs of your child’s developing imagination as early as their first birthday when they pretend a banana is a phone. Hello?

When bathing an infant, use an infant bath that meets current safety standards, or line a sink with a towel.
Lay out everything you’ll need and double-check that a clean towel is ready next to the bath before you start.
Fill the basin with no more than 2” of warm water and turn the faucet off before un******ng your baby and putting them, feet first, into the water.
Support your baby’s head and neck with your non-dominant hand throughout the bath, using your other hand to gently wash and rinse their hair and body.

January is National Bath Safety Month - and the most important safety rule is to never ever leave a child under the age of 5 unattended in the bathtub, not for a second.
If you are missing a needed item, remove your child from the bath while you locate it, even if you are just turning to a cabinet behind you.
Keep one hand on your baby at all times, and stay next to the tub with eyes on your child while bathing toddlers and preschoolers.

While viral pneumonia is treated with rest, fluids and over the counter fever-reducing medications, bacteria pneumonia requires a full course of antibiotics, taken exactly as instructed.
Do not give cough suppressants, as coughing helps clear the lungs and increase oxygen intake.
Children who’ve had pneumonia have a higher risk of developing asthma and chronic lung disease; prevent bacterial pneumonia infections by getting your child vaccinated.

When your child is coughing and wheezing, it may seem like a lingering cold. However, when these symptoms are accompanied by labored breathing, drawing in the chest instead of expanding out while inhaling, and often chest pain, it could be pneumonia.
Pneumonia can be caused by a virus or bacteria, spreading through coughing or sneezing. It fills the small sacs in the lungs with fluid and pus, limiting your child’s oxygen intake.
If you suspect your child has pneumonia, call New Canaan to arrange an urgent appointment.

Food poisoning can be caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, molds and toxins - and contamination can happen at any point in the food chain, including when food is sitting on the holiday buffet table just a little too long.
Make sure foods are thawed properly in the refrigerator. Cook them thoroughly to the proper internal temperature for each kind of protein.
Ensure leftovers are placed in covered containers in the fridge promptly after eating. If leftovers aren’t eaten in 3-4 days, throw them out to keep your family healthy.

For otherwise healthy adults, food poisoning can be just uncomfortable and inconvenient. For infants, toddlers and children, food poisoning can be much more serious. Food poisoning symptoms can dehydrate kids very quickly, so when vomiting or diarrhea lasts more than one day, watch for weakness, dizziness or if your child seems disoriented.
Other symptoms of dehydration and complications include little to no urination, intense thirst, severe stomach pain or a fever of 102˚ or higher. If any of these occur, call our office immediately.

While there is no cure for Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), prompt diagnosis after symptoms appear can mean more effective treatment.
We’ll discuss anti-inflammatory medications, disease-modifying antirheumatic medications and biologic therapies. Symptoms can be eased with physical therapy, occupational therapy and a healthy diet. Your child will need emotional support and involvement with activities and friends.
Fortunately, JIA goes into remission for nearly 50% of kids by the time they are adults.

Your child can develop Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) as young as 6 months old until they are in their teens.
JIA causes their immune system to attack their joints - and there is no clear cause, although children with relatives with autoimmune conditions are at a higher risk.
Your child may limp, avoid certain movements, or complain of pain and aching.
JIA is rare, but if you notice your child at any age has a swollen joint, call our office for an immediate evaluation, as this can also be a symptom of infection.

After a Type 1 diabetes diagnosis, your child should have a “go bag” they keep with them at all times at school. This should include a glucose meter, juice or glucose tabs and a healthy snack.
The school nurse should keep a bigger kit in their office that includes a full month’s supply of insulin, syringes or pens, glucose meter, testing strips, spare pump supplies, glucagon, ketone testing materials and emergency contact information.
If you have any questions about sending your child back to school after they’ve been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, message your New Canaan Pediatrics provider.

When your child is diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, you may be concerned about their health while at school.
First, create a plan with the school nurse, all of the educators who will see your child throughout the day, and administration.
Determine where and when your child can test their blood sugar and administer insulin.
Make sure they can have snacks and water throughout the day, along with immediate access to their meter, insulin and a juice box.
