Silver Hill’s Therapeutic Horticulture Program offers patients a unique, evidence-based approach to wellness. Led by Michael Cassaro, our patients meet once weekly to cultivate plants—growing alongside them in knowledge and self-care. As patients nurture plants, they discover how to nurture themselves, practicing mindfulness, building new skills, and experiencing moments of wonder and joy.
This hands-on therapy encourages patients to slow down, use their senses, and stay present. It unites with DBT skills, helping participants manage stress and anxiety, improve mood, and develop lasting coping mechanisms. Gardening activities create opportunities for connection, creativity, and positive experiences.
Through horticulture, patients explore powerful metaphors that mirror personal growth—for example, a seed’s tough coat must soften to allow growth in a safe environment, just as people need spaces to be vulnerable to thrive. One resident beautifully likened his journey to a plant cutting that grows temporary roots in water, then must adapt and grow stronger roots in soil—a perfect symbol for building resilience at Silver Hill and beyond.
