Connected Mumma Doula

Connected Mumma Doula Birth & Postpartum Doula - Breastfeeding Councilor I am a mom to two amazing girls, and a wife to my husband of almost 3 years.

I have a bachelor’s degree in Child Development and Family Studies from West Virginia University. I previously worked as an early childhood educatIon teacher and home visitor for Head Start. My passion for helping families navigate pregnancy, birth, and parenthood really took flight with the birth of my first daughter and I decided to launch Connected Mumma Doula after my second daughters birth.

✨ Happy Mother’s Day ✨

To all of the moms out there, who were once just girls, that now walk in the world with their heart outside of their chest, I see you, I honor you, today and every day.

“Krista was the perfect doula we could ask for. We had to go for an induction at short notice, and despite the urgency, Krista helped us prepare our birth plan within a couple of hours. She empowered us with knowledge about our rights at the hospital and ensured we could stay true to our birth plan, which was crucial as some of the doctors on our team tended to push their own agendas.

Our induction lasted four days, and Krista stayed with us throughout, providing constant reassurance at every step. As an added bonus, she also clicked wonderful pictures throughout the process, capturing precious moments we will cherish forever.

Krista’s dedication, knowledge, and supportive nature made all the difference during our childbirth experience. We couldn’t have asked for a better doula.”

Pregnancy, labor, and birth are wildly unpredictable. Part of my job as your doula is to help you navigate curve balls that may come your way. Just because your plan needs to change does not mean it has to be a terrible or traumatic experience. You still have options and rights!

I came across a Tik Tok today of an influencer sharing her birth story. Her story had so many 🚩 it was hard to listen to. You could tell she was actively processing her experience as she was sharing. I fear that she’s not alone, and I hear stories like hers everyday.

Too many birthing people walk away from their experience feeling unheard, violated, or dismissed. All to often they are then told ‘at least you have a healthy baby.’

This is not okay.

Birth trauma can stem from feeling powerless or ignored during labor, being subject to medical interventions without informed consent, lack of emotional or physical support, and disrespectful or abusive care.

As a mother and birth doula, I’ve seen how trauma can silently shape postpartum recovery and mental health. This Maternal Mental Health Month, I want to remind you that your experience matters. If your birth left emotional scars, you are not alone and it’s not your fault.

You deserve support, here are some resources…

As a doula, I’m often asked how to reduce the risk of tearing during birth! First tearing is a natural, and sometimes inevitable part of the birth process.

However there are steps you can take that prioritize your perineal health! Here are 5 ways to help protect your perineum before, during, and after birth:

Before labor begins you can start perineal massage around 34 weeks. It can help improve elasticity of your perineum, and increase the mind body connection.

During labor it’s important to prioritize intuitive movement, and to utilize upright positions like hands and knees or squatting. This type of movement allows the perineum to stretch gradually with less pressure.

Holding a warm compress on the perineum during crowning can ease discomfort, as well as allow the tissue to relax stretch.

Breathing baby out with slow, controlled pushing helps avoid rapid stretching which can lead to tearing. Working with your body and the sensations that are being felt rather than tightening and tensing your pelvic floor.

Pelvic floor physical therapy is an amazing tool to prepare and recover from birth. Learning how to control and relax the muscles of your pelvic floor can be of great use during pushing. Pelvic floor PT during postpartum can help you restore strength, function, and promote general healing.

Every birth is different, but these gentle strategies can go a long way in supporting your body.

Tag a mama-to-be or someone on their birth team who needs this!

May is Maternal Mental Health Month, a time to honor the emotional transformation of mothers everywhere.

Did you know that how a mother feels about her birth experience can deeply impact her mental health?

When women feel respected, supported, and involved in decisions during birth, they’re more likely to thrive emotionally after. Birth satisfaction isn’t just about the outcome, it’s about the experience, the care, and the connection.

Hiring a doula is one powerful way to invest in a positive birth, and a happier, healthier postpartum period. Continuous support before, during, and after birth can make a huge impact.

Let’s advocate for respectful, informed, and compassionate maternity care, because every mother deserves to feel seen, heard, and safe.

✨Coached + Intuitive pushing✨

During coached pushing the person giving birth is instructed by medical staff on when and how to push. This is often immediately after full cervical dilation (10 cm) is reached. Coached pushing typically involves holding the breath and bearing down for a count of 10 seconds, repeated 2–3 times during each contraction.

During intuitive pushing the mother follows her body’s natural urges and timing to push, without external direction from medical staff. The person giving birth feels the increase pressure with contractions and leans into the urge, usually with shorter, gentler pushes guided by sensations in their body.

Clinical guidelines increasingly support intuitive or spontaneous/physiologic pushing over coached pushing in most low-risk births. Not only does intuitive pushing reduce the risk of tearing but it also reduces maternal fatigue because pushing with the body’s natural urges is often less exhausting. Benefits aren’t just limited to the person giving birth, babies receive better oxygenation when moms avoiding prolonged breath-holding. Last but not least, maternal satisfaction is generally higher when birthers feel more in control of their experience.

Coached pushing is often used in hospital settings, especially when birthers use an epidural. Sometimes it’s used to speed up the delivery process if fetal monitoring shows potential concerns.

To increase your chances of spontaneous pushing work with a midwife instead of an OB, hire a doula, and educate yourself on the birth process!

Megan Kling's two pregnancies, one year apart, were both affected in different ways by Wisconsin abortion laws.

I recently responded to an obstetricians video online where she said she would never recommend women stay pregnant beyond 41 weeks. She said the ‘SWEEPSER’ study was stopped early because there were adverse outcomes in the non-induction group compared to the induction group.

She wasn’t wrong… well, she was wrong about the name of the study, it’s called the SWEPIS study, and it was stopped early (1380 women in each group) because there were 5 still births in the group of women who were induced at 42 weeks compared to 41 weeks

BUT, look at the study properly and you’ll see that there were 5 venues in Stockholm that intentionally increased care and monitoring for women between 41-42 weeks, and none of the women in these groups had stillbirths despite going to 42 weeks. The stillbirths were at the other venues who did not have a clear strategy for caring for women beyond 41 weeks.

The SWEPIS study shows that induction at 41 weeks is not the only way to reduce stillbirth… the other option is to acknowledge the slight increase in risk and mitigate it with additional appropriate maternity care and monitoring (for those women who want to avoid induction AND mitigate the stillbirth risk).

I did remind the obstetrician of the actual contents of the SWEPIS study, but she chose to delete my comment. She also said not to take advice off the internet - so feel free to read the SWEPIS (not SWEEPSER) study for yourself, it’s available full text online

Hi I’m Krista DeLorenzo, Connected Mumma Doula!

As I start my 4th year in business, I spend more time serving families, and less time curating my socials! So …..time for some updated pictures with the ones who mean the world to me. 🥹🫶🏽

Big shout out to my husband, Deno, for helping me create this dream life of ours. To be a successful birth worker requires so much support. If I’m on call, he’s on call. He picks up where I leave off with homeschooling. He makes sure to call in back up (thank you to our girls grandmas as well) when I need sleep if he has to work. He makes it possible for me to fully show up for my clients! 🫶🏽

Check out for all of your photography needs, she’s so kind and extremely talented!

Do formula companies sabotage breastfeeding?

These bottles of formula come in a packet of 6 marketed as a ‘First Baby Milk Formula Starter Pack From Birth’.

Although it comes with a disclaimer on the box that ‘Newborn babies may take only small amounts of infant formula to start with’ what sort of message does the size of this bottle send to parents worried that their newborn is having enough of their breastmilk?

Research tells us that on average in the first 24 hours a newborn’s feed will average about 7ml...meaning this bottle is 10 TIMES larger!

For many new babies 4-5 swallows of colostrum per feed is all they need in the first 24 hours.

The formula company also advises that once opened any unused formula be disposed of within one hour meaning a lot is going to be wasted in this kit making it an expensive and non environmentally friendly option.
