In a new study released in January 2020, researchers at Duke University report they have found radioactivity in stream sediments near wastewater treatment plants that continued to process non-fracking oil and gas drilling wastewater.

To study the issue, Duke researchers took samples near three wastewater treatment plants in western Pennsylvania, three sites that had previously been studied prior to the end of treating Marcellus Shale wastewater.

CONCLUSION: The DEP Northwest Regional Office's investigation into determining the cause and/or origin of this incident was inconclusive. Based on some of the observations made during various complaint investigations and similar accounts related to the Department, the Department can only postulate a waste containing Mesityl Oxide or another similar compound reacted with a sulfer compound under a specific set of conditions somewhere within the sewer system creating the distinctive "cat urine" odor and allowed an easy pathway within the sewer system for it to quickly spread over a large area. NO SPECIFIC INDUSTRY OR WASTE STREAM COULD BE DEFINITIVELY IDENTIFIED AS THE EXACT CAUSE OF THE ODOR.

Landfills are supposed to pre-treat fracking waste before sending it to a sewage treatment plant — unless it’s a smaller plant. Gary Kruppa found that out when the Belle Vernon plant he runs started failing water quality tests.
