Sometimes the world can feel like a place of overwhelming sadness and isolation. To read the news is to witness only despair and isolation. It is the beginning of spring but the bleakness of winter moods can still be hanging on.
Fortunately for me, one of my children had a choir concert tonight.
It is my belief that an event - whether for music, drama, sports, academic achievement- for our community’s children is one of the most pure forms of love and connection. It is a reminder of goodness.
Sitting in an auditorium for my child’s choir event is the antidote to despair. Children are standing on the bleachers and singing with joy. Yes, some don’t remember words, some are dancing along to the unknown tune in their head, some are obviously there because they “have to be.” But I also see children who are so cared for that their adults scrubbed them and dressed them in their best attire and got them to school in the evening. I see children secure in the knowledge that there is an adult who is there for THEM and who are beaming within that joy. I see caregivers and friends and siblings who are so proud of these small humans that they love. I see teachers who passionately care about their work and their students.
How can that not be beautiful? How can that not be joyful?
How can that not remind you in the goodness of children and the world and our goals to protect and love them.
Next time you are at a school event look around. Witness the joy of children and adults. The pride at all the minor achievements. Because those small things build to be something huge.
