When I talk about Herbs for the Postpartum time, I am NOT talking about boring capsules or really strong tinctures. 🤮

I am talking about spicy teas with lots of honey, buttery ghee added to flatbread, and sweet dessert balls, called laddus! 😍

While I simply can't list all of the yummy Herbal Foods in one post, here are some simple herbs you could use with little herbal background!

✨Ginger - for stoking digestive fire, balancing Vata, and increasing the immunity

✨Garlic - (fried in ghee) for enhancing lactation, building digestion, and increasing immunity

✨Fennel - for balancing hormones, stoking digestive fire (Agni), and enhancing lactation

✨Lavender, Rose, and Chamomile (in small amounts) - for relaxing the nervous system and enhancing sleep

There is so much more to talk about on this pillar, but I'll leave it short and sweet. 😉

Now more than ever, we understand that diet has a huge impact on our well-being. In the case, food is medicine for every new mama!

In Ayurveda, all of the Mothers, Mothers' in Laws, Aunties, and Wise Womben go to a new mother's home to prepare fresh food daily. Mainly, the food acts to stoke digestive fire and reduce Vata. Since Vata has the qualities of cold, ungrounding, dry, and rough, we aim to make warm, soup, oily foods for new families. I LOVE cooking up a delicious bowl of daal with homemade herbed chapati. I also love to make chicken bone broth soup, risotto, or pretty much anything that suits a new family's taste buds.

✨🍵SOUP is the hero! Soups are warm and often contain a lot of fresh, wholesome vegetables. Round off soup with a protein (white meat or legumes) to keep Mama satisfied!

✨🧈🥑HEALTHY FATS are where it's at! Say YES to ghee, butter, avocado oil, sesame oil, and fresh avocados. All of these are going to balance postpartum hormones (skip those pesky mood-swings if you can!), maintain abundant milk supply, lubricate joints and muscles so they can heal, keep your digestion MOOOOVing, and even support much-needed sleep.

✨ 🧂Spices keep it.....YUMMY and FIREY. Try spices like cumin, fennel, black pepper, cinnamon, and garlic. Those all ignite digestive fire while providing gentle immune support.

✨🚫🥬🥤Skip the salads and frozen smoothies. These are often empty calories and have harsh fibers that are simply too difficult to digest immediately postpartum. The coldness of these foods often aggravates Vata Dosha further

Sounds like a little much, right? Absolutely not! When baby is born, the placenta detaches from the uterine wall, creating a wound the size of a dinner plate! Mama's body just did an amazing thing, and her body requires adequate REST to heal.

In Ayurveda, new Mothers don't leave the home or do ANY household chores for a full 42 days after birth. Here is what I recommend to get the rest you need!

✨ At least for the first week postpartum, try to stay in bed as much as possible. Of course get up to go to the bathroom, and keep baby with you. (Talk to me about creating a postpartum Nest so you aren't running around the house for diapers, pads, pacifiers, and who-knows-what-else 😉) Keeping baby close to you will increase milk supply, oxytocin (feel good hormone), and bonding.

✨Assign tasks to others in the household, and ask for help, REGULARLY. You deserve it, Mama!

✨Avoid stairs in the first week. Stairs have a HUGE impact on your pelvic floor. RESTING now can help you avoid pelvic floor problems in the future.

✨Aim to get at least a 4 hour stretch of sleep during the night, and take 2 naps per day (or as many as you can 🤣)

Did you know that all culture across the world had a specific was to care for mamas after they have given birth? In China, it is called "Zoo Yum Zi" or "Sitting the Month," and even the local Amish community has a practice of "Sitting In" after having a baby. In Ayurveda, we call it the "Sacred Window." As an Ayurdoula, I provide postpartum care according to the four pillars of care. Over the next few posts, I'll share these pillars of care that encompasses all that I do. 👍🥰

After quite a hiatus, it is time to reintroduce myself as an Ayurvedic Postpartum Doula! When I had my son almost 4 years ago, my path to become a postpartum support person was laid out before me. I struggled greatly during that time, and found that God was calling me to help others through the deeply profound transition of birthing a human!

I have since completed a two year long study in Ayurvedic Postpartum Care. I take care of womb-holders so that they can take care of their babies! This can look like special Ayurvedic home-cooked meals, herbal teas to balance hormones, belly wrapping, massage for both mama and baby, and SO MUCH MORE.

I am so happy I have been called to do this work, and I will continue to strive to provide life-changing postpartum care and education.
