Down Syndrome: Facts Over Myths

Let’s break some myths!

Myth: People with Down syndrome can’t learn.
Truth: People with Down syndrome can and do learn throughout their lives; they may just do so at their own pace.

Myth: Down syndrome is rare.
Truth: About 1 in every 700 babies in the U.S. is born with Down syndrome, that’s around 6,000 babies each year!

Myth: People with Down syndrome can’t live independent lives.
Truth: Many people with Down syndrome go to college, hold jobs, live
independently, and contribute in countless ways to their communities.

Knowledge leads to understanding. Understanding leads to inclusion. 💙💛

A huge thank you to the volunteers from Holy Spirit Parish’s Men of Faith for their incredible generosity and hard work! This past week, they repaired a ramp for one of our DON consumers that was collapsing, ensuring it’s safe and sturdy once again. 🙏✨

This amazing group has helped several of our consumers, and we’re so grateful for their continued support and dedication to serving others in our community.

Our Story

Disability Options Network (DON) is the federally supported Center for Independent Living (CIL) for Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Lawrence, Mercer and Westmoreland counties. We are a consumer controlled, non-profit organization serving western PA. We offer services at no cost to those with disabilities. We currently have offices in three locations; New Castle, Penn Hills, Greensburg.

As a CIL, the organization must be consumer-controlled, meaning 51% of the board and staff must be an individual with disabilities, also under State and Federal Law the five core services that define the CIL must be provided. Those services include: Peer Support, Advocacy, Skills Training, Transition Services (both from nursing home back to community and from school to adult life) and Information and Referral

Therefore, DON’s mission is: “To empower people with disabilities to live as independently as they choose.” This is done through the provision of the five core services. In addition, fair housing training and consultation, emergency preparedness training, educational advocacy supports, durable medical equipment re-use and other services are offered throughout the seven-county region.
