Why does it feel like you’re walking on eggshells around your own child? 🥚

For many parents, the shift into the tween and adolescent years can feel sudden, confusing, and overwhelming.
The child you once felt connected to may now seem distant, reactive, or hard to reach.

You are not alone in feeling this way. It’s actually a normal part of a child’s development.
During this stage, it is important to remember:

1. Reframe the behavior
What may feel like defiance is often a normal part of development.
This is how children begin to separate, grow, and form their own identity.

2. Stay grounded instead of reactive
When emotions run high, try not to match their intensity.
Pause, take a breath, and respond from a place of calm

When parents can stay steady, it creates a sense of safety and helps children learn how to regulate their own emotions.

At City Psychology Group, we support parents in navigating the challenges of raising tweens and teens, helping families strengthen communication, connection, and emotional understanding.

If you have been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to support your child, you do not have to navigate this alone.

It can be difficult to tell the difference between a child who is highly active and one who may be experiencing ADHD.

While these behaviors can look similar, there are important key differences in how they show up, how much they impact daily life, and how we work with families. Many children struggle to sit still for sustained periods of time, and that doesn’t mean they have ADHD. It’s important to distinguish between normal childhood development vs. an actual disorder, especially as kids don’t always look the same in their development.

👉 ADHD may look like:
• difficulty sustaining attention, even during preferred activities
• frequent forgetfulness or losing things
• trouble following multi-step directions
• impulsivity that interferes with daily functioning
• difficulty regulating emotions
• challenges across multiple settings (home, school, social)

👉 Active children may look like:
• high energy but able to focus when interested
• talkative or fidgety but can follow directions
• behavior improves with structure and routine
• occasional impulsivity, not constant
• energy that does not significantly interfere with functioning
• able to regulate emotions with support

✅ Key difference:
ADHD symptoms are persistent, occur across multiple settings, and interfere with daily functioning. Active behavior is more situational and part of typical development.

At City Psychology Group, we support children and families in better understanding attention, behavior, and emotional regulation.

If you have concerns about your child, reaching out for guidance can be an important first step.

Supporting mental health goes beyond the therapy room.

It also means showing up in the community, sharing knowledge, and helping people feel more informed and supported in their everyday lives.

At City Psychology Group, we value opportunities to connect with parents, schools, and community groups to talk about mental health in a way that feels practical, approachable, and real.

These conversations help parents better understand their teens, navigate stress and emotional challenges, and feel more confident in supporting their families.

We believe that when communities are informed, families feel more supported.

If your school, PTA, or community group is looking to bring meaningful mental health education to your community, we would love to connect and tailor a talk for your group.

There is so much anxiety that college seniors have to grapple with as they stand on the brink of a major life change. However, in the last year, college seniors are faced with even more uncertainty as they confront low employment rates, AI fears, and geopolitical tensions. This has lead to a spike in panic during a time that is always anxiety provoking.

If you have been overthinking your next steps, feeling stuck, or powerless , you are not alone.

The truth is that we are never in control of what happens to us in the future. However, we are in control of what we do now and how we frame things to ourselves.

One small shift in your thinking can make a big difference in your well-being.

Instead of asking, “what if everything goes wrong,” try asking:
What is one thing I can do right now?

That shift helps you move from feeling frozen to taking action. Taking action helps us feel more in control and less powerless.

At City Psychology Group, we work with students and young adults navigating transitions, anxiety, and uncertainty, helping them build tools to feel more confident and in control.

Do you go through the day constantly judging yourself? So many of us do this, and don’t even realize it, because it’s so automatic.

That critical voice in your head is your “Inner Critic,” and often tells you:

“You’re not good enough”
“You’ll probably fail anyway”
“You don’t deserve happiness.”

This voice didn’t start today.
It often begins early, based on our experiences, and over time it becomes louder and automatic.

The problem?
The more you believe it, the more you hold yourself back.

You avoid opportunities.
You doubt your worth.
You start building a life around fear instead of possibility.

But here’s the truth.
This voice isn’t balanced or factual, which means it can also be challenged and changed.

Therapy can help you recognize those patterns and build a more balanced, compassionate way of thinking.

Parenting can be one of the most meaningful experiences in life, but it can also bring significant emotional challenges.

In recognition of International Parental Mental Health Awareness Week, we want to acknowledge the mental and emotional demands that many parents face every day.

Parents often experience:

• chronic stress
• sleep deprivation
• anxiety about their children's wellbeing
• feelings of guilt or self doubt
• pressure to balance work, family, and personal responsibilities

These experiences are common, yet many parents feel they have to handle everything on their own. Taking care of your mental health is an important part of taking care of your family. When parents receive support and have the tools to manage stress, the entire family benefits.

📍 If you’re a parent feeling overwhelmed, support is available.

Our therapists at City Psychology Group work with parents to manage stress, anxiety, and the emotional challenges that come with raising children.

Many people struggle to set healthy boundaries with family and friends.

It often starts with good intentions. You want to be helpful, supportive, and avoid disappointing others. But over time, saying “yes” when you really mean “no” can lead to stress, frustration, and unhealthy relationship patterns.

In this video, our licensed clinicians share our 4 easy tips for setting boundaries in less than a minute:

✔️ Understand your limits so you know when it’s time to say no
✔️ Keep communication clear without long explanations
✔️ Expect some discomfort as you practice new habits
✔️ Stay consistent with the boundaries you set

Healthy boundaries aren’t about pushing people away. They help protect your time, energy, and emotional well-being, while supporting healthier relationships.

📞 If you’d like guidance navigating relationship stress, communication challenges, or emotional boundaries, call (845) 373-5098 to schedule a 15-minute complementary consultation.

Struggling with the same relationship conflict again and again?

Conflict is a normal part of every relationship. But the way couples communicate during conflict can determine whether the relationship grows stronger or becomes more disconnected.

At City Psychology Group, we often see couples who care deeply about each other but feel stuck in the same arguments over and over again.

Here are 4 therapist-backed communication strategies that can help de-escalate conflict and create healthier conversations:

1️⃣ Pause before responding
Strong emotions can make conversations spiral quickly. Taking a brief pause can help you respond more thoughtfully instead of reacting impulsively.

2️⃣ Focus on understanding your partner’s side, not winning
Many arguments become a battle of who is “right.” Try shifting your goal toward understanding your partner’s perspective.

3️⃣ Use “I” statements
Instead of saying “You never listen,” try
“I feel unheard when I’m interrupted.”

4️⃣ Validate your partner’s emotions
Validation doesn’t mean agreement. It simply means acknowledging how your partner feels.

Healthy communication is a skill, and like any skill, it can be learned and improved.

If relationship conflicts are starting to feel overwhelming or repetitive, couples therapy can help both partners develop tools for healthier communication and deeper understanding.
