The Duke of Burgundy (2014) Directed by Peter Strickland, this film is a masterclass in atmosphere, using the textures and sounds of a secluded European estate to tell a story of Le***an B**M and emotional labor.
The Story: Cynthia (Sidse Babett Knudsen) and Evelyn (Chiara D'Anna) live in an isolated house, spending their days studying butterflies and moths. At first, their relationship appears to be that of a strict mistress and her submissive maid. However, as the film progresses, the layers are peeled back to reveal that these roles are part of a meticulously rehearsed ritual designed to maintain their bond. The film explores the friction that arises when one partner’s desires become a chore for the other, making it a surprisingly relatable look at the compromises inherent in any long-term relationship.
