We’re proud to share an op-ed by our CEO, Cara Pace, on a critical issue facing hospice care in New York.

The state’s Certificate of Need (CON) process was created to make sure new healthcare facilities truly serve their communities and deliver high-quality care. But this decades-old system has a loophole — one that’s letting private equity and for-profit interests move into essential areas like hospice care, without the same oversight or accountability.

Thanks to the leadership of Senator Liz Krueger and Assemblymember Amy Paulin, new legislation (S.3437/A.565) would stop the expansion of for-profit hospices in New York and protect the compassionate, community-based care that defines our mission at United Hospice.

Now, Governor Kathy Hochul has the opportunity to make New York a leader in preserving hospice care focused on dignity — not profits.

✅ Fact: Hospice is not about giving up, it’s about focusing on quality of life. Our team provides expert medical, emotional, and spiritual support so patients can live as fully and comfortably as possible.

❌ Myth: Hospice is only for the last days of life.
✅ Fact: Hospice care is available for months, not just days. The sooner hospice begins, the more support patients and families receive.

❌ Myth: Hospice is only for the patient.
✅ Fact: Hospice supports the entire family, from counseling to bereavement services, we’re here for loved ones every step of the way.
