I had the honor and privilege of performing surgery during Partners for Visual Health’s 35th annual mission to El Salvador. This is my sixth year and is still the most rewarding, humbling and life-affirming experience. Thank you to all my patients for your understanding of my absence from my office this past week. I’ll be back on Monday.

I’m so honored and proud to be on the Board of Directors of Partners for Visual Health, a nonprofit organization that conducts annual medical missions to provide eye care to those most in need in El Salvador. I just returned from our annual campaign, and although the crew of volunteers was down to 9 from the usual 60 due to the pandemic, the work was still so rewarding, the cataract surgeries were still so challenging, and the patients were still so sweet. I’m grateful and humbled to be part of this amazing group. Hopefully we’ll be back in full force next year. Www.partnersforvisualhealth.org.

Thank you to Montefiore Nyack Hospital and Pfizer for providing the COVID-19 vaccine to Dr. Soo Mee Pak this past Tuesday. The vaccine will help curb the pandemic and get us closer to normalcy. Our office continues to take extensive precautions to keep our patients safe including screening patients for COVID risk, eliminating our waiting room, taking the temperature of and giving sanitizer to all visitors to the office and disinfecting all equipment between patients. Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season! Stay safe, friends!

We have reopened our office and are currently scheduling patients for visits! We are, of course, implementing many new measures to reduce contact and increase safety. All patients will be screened for possible COVID and must wear a mask to the office. We have eliminated our waiting room and front desk. Be assured that all equipment is disinfected between patients. We look forward to seeing you soon! Thank you for your patience and cooperation. Stay safe, everyone!

Our primary concern is the health and safety of our patients. Right now, there is a very real risk of the COVID-19 pandemic that threatens all of us, but especially the elderly and those with comorbidities such as diabetes, cardiac disease, hypertension, respiratory disease and cancer. We are encouraging all our patients to stay home and adopt social distancing to reduce their own risk of contracting the coronavirus but also to help flatten the curve of new cases.

Given this, we have made the very painful decision to limit patient visits to those needing urgent care and are asking patients with routine visits in the next few weeks to reschedule. We are always here for those who are having an urgent problem. If you do need to come to see us in the office for an urgent matter, our staff will be wearing protective gear. We are also, of course, exercising extra precautions to reduce the risk of spreading the virus such as disinfecting surfaces and promoting frequent hand washing and sanitizing.

If we don’t flatten the curve of new cases in the US, there will not be enough ICU beds and ventilators by mid-April. This means crushing ethical choices of who gets intubated and who is left to die. This sounds like a horror movie but is actually reality in Italy and Iran right now. In some countries people over age 65 aren’t even assessed because they’re overwhelmed trying to save all the younger patients who have a higher chance of survival.

This last link is on how to practice social distancing. https://medium.com//social-distancing-this-is-not-a-snow-day-ac21d7fa78b4

This is my plea to all of our patients, whom we cherish, to please help us all by practicing social distancing. So many lives depend on it. Be safe, everyone.

I’ve been away from the practice for the last week to go on my fourth annual mission to El Salvador. If you needed urgent care and was referred to another ophthalmologist during my absence, thank you for your understanding. I’m so grateful to be part of the team of 62 volunteers from around the US who examined 1664 patients and performed 125 surgeries. I personally did four corneal transplants and 15 cataract extractions. As always, such a humbling and amazing experience.
