                                            Thursday Thought:

Have you ever thought about what sciatica actually is? A lot of people seem to have it or at least think they might, but what is it really?

Sciatica, by definition, is a condition where the sciatic nerve in the posterior pelvic region (the back of the pelvis) is being compressed, typically by the piriformis muscle (in the deep gluteal region). This causes nerve symptoms down the entirety of the posterior leg from that level down. The sciatic nerve is deep to the piriformis muscle in 88% of the population. In the other 12% of people, their sciatic nerve pierces the piriformis. That 12% of people are much more at risk for Sciatica than the other group.

Now, there are other causes of symptoms that go down the posterior leg. For example, spinal stenosis or disc bulges which compress the nerve at the root. These cause symptoms down the leg as well, but those symptoms are based on the spinal nerve root that is impinged. These symptoms are known as radiculopathy.
