Victim-blaming comes in many forms, and is oftentimes more subtle, and unconscious than Metzger’s tirade.
It can apply to cases of r**e and sexual assault, but also to more mundane crimes, like a person who gets pickpocketed and is then chided for his decision to carry his wallet in his back pocket.
Any time someone defaults to questioning what a victim could have done differently to prevent a crime, he or she is participating, to some degree, in the culture of victim-blaming..
âś…CASE STUDY:-
(1) In 2003, a 14-year-old girl named Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped from her bedroom in Salt Lake City, Utah at knifepoint. She spent the next nine months held captive by her abductors, Brian Mitchell and Wanda Barzee. After her rescue and details of her time in captivity become public, many people wondered why she hadn't tried to escape or reveal her identity.
(2) When news reports surfaced of a woman being r**ed, many questions center on what the victims were wearing or doing that might have "provoked" the attack. When people are mugged, others frequently wonder what victims were doing out so late at night or why they did not take extra measures to protect themselves from the crime.
â•️Challenging Common R**e Myths:
1) She asked for it. – No one asks to be r**ed. This is victim-blaming pure and simple.
2) It wasn’t really r**e. – Apparently people still feel the need to differentiate between “legitimate r**e” and presumably “illegitimate r**e.” This misguided sentiment has a silencing effect on survivors, many of whom will say they chose not to report because they didn’t think it was serious enough or that they would be believed.
3) He didn’t mean to. – There aren’t “blurred lines” when it comes to consent. Studies suggest that most campus r**es are committed by repeat offenders.
4) She wanted it. – This is a variation of #1.
5) She lied. – Again, best research puts false reporting rates somewhere between 2-5%. That means 95-98% of r**e reports are true.
6) R**e is a trivial event.-R**e and other forms of gender-based violence can have an immense impact on an individual.
