🌿 Fungal Ball in Sinuses – A Hidden Cause of Chronic Sinus Problems
This image shows a fungal ball (mycetoma) inside the sinus cavity — a condition where fungal material accumulates and forms a dense mass within the sinuses.
Many patients suffer for months with symptoms thinking it’s just chronic sinusitis, but the cause may actually be a fungal infection.
⚠️ Common Symptoms:
• Persistent nasal blockage
• Facial pain or pressure (especially one-sided)
• Thick nasal discharge
• Headache
• Reduced sense of smell
• Recurrent sinus infections not responding to medicines
Fungal balls usually affect one sinus (commonly maxillary sinus) and are more common in individuals with long-standing sinus issues.
🔬 Diagnosis & Treatment:
Diagnosis is done through endoscopic examination and CT scan.
Treatment is primarily surgical (endoscopic sinus surgery) to remove the fungal mass completely.
✔ No long-term medications required in most cases
✔ Relief is usually quick after removal
✔ Prevents complications and recurrence
🌟 Why Early Treatment Matters:
If ignored, it can lead to persistent infection, worsening sinus symptoms, and complications.
👉 If you have long-standing sinus issues not improving with treatment, don’t ignore it—proper evaluation is essential.
