🌿 Fungal Ball in Sinuses – A Hidden Cause of Chronic Sinus Problems

This image shows a fungal ball (mycetoma) inside the sinus cavity — a condition where fungal material accumulates and forms a dense mass within the sinuses.

Many patients suffer for months with symptoms thinking it’s just chronic sinusitis, but the cause may actually be a fungal infection.

⚠️ Common Symptoms:

• Persistent nasal blockage
• Facial pain or pressure (especially one-sided)
• Thick nasal discharge
• Headache
• Reduced sense of smell
• Recurrent sinus infections not responding to medicines

Fungal balls usually affect one sinus (commonly maxillary sinus) and are more common in individuals with long-standing sinus issues.

🔬 Diagnosis & Treatment:

Diagnosis is done through endoscopic examination and CT scan.
Treatment is primarily surgical (endoscopic sinus surgery) to remove the fungal mass completely.

✔ No long-term medications required in most cases
✔ Relief is usually quick after removal
✔ Prevents complications and recurrence

🌟 Why Early Treatment Matters:

If ignored, it can lead to persistent infection, worsening sinus symptoms, and complications.

👉 If you have long-standing sinus issues not improving with treatment, don’t ignore it—proper evaluation is essential.

🌟 Successful Treatment of a Rare Neck Condition

Grateful moments like these remind us why we do what we do. Recently, we had the opportunity to treat a young doctor’s father who was diagnosed with cysticercosis of the neck—a rare and often challenging condition to identify and manage.

Cysticercosis in the neck region can be difficult to diagnose, as it may mimic other common swellings or infections. It requires careful clinical evaluation, imaging, and precise treatment planning to ensure the right outcome.

With timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment, the patient responded well and is now on the path to recovery. Seeing the relief and happiness in the family, especially from a fellow doctor, makes the journey even more meaningful.

✨ Every rare case successfully treated is a step forward in delivering better, safer, and more specialized care.

👶 Weak Cry Since Birth? It Could Be a Congenital Laryngeal Web

If a child has a weak cry, hoarseness, or breathing difficulty since birth, it should not be ignored. In some cases, the underlying cause may be a Congenital Laryngeal Web.

Dr. Kalpana Nagpal, ENT Specialist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, with more than 27 years of expertise in airway and voice disorders.

🔎 What is Congenital Laryngeal Web?

A laryngeal web is a rare condition where a thin membrane forms across the voice box (larynx) from birth. This can partially block the airway and affect the normal vibration of vocal cords.

⚠️ Common Signs & Symptoms:

• Weak or absent cry since birth
• Hoarse or abnormal voice
• Noisy breathing (stridor)
• Breathing difficulty in severe cases
• Feeding problems in infants

Severity can vary — from mild voice changes to significant airway obstruction.

🩺 Diagnosis & Treatment:

Early diagnosis is done through:
• ENT examination
• Laryngoscopy (visualizing the voice box)

Treatment depends on severity and may include:
✔ Observation in mild cases
✔ Endoscopic surgical correction in moderate to severe cases

🌿 Why Early Diagnosis Matters:

Timely evaluation helps:
• Ensure proper breathing
• Improve voice quality
• Prevent airway complications
• Support healthy growth and development

If your child has persistent voice changes or breathing issues since birth, early ENT consultation is essential.

🔴 Recurrent Ulcers on Epiglottis – Don’t Ignore Persistent Throat Pain

Do you experience repeated throat ulcers, pain while swallowing, or discomfort deep inside the throat? If these symptoms keep coming back, the cause may not be a simple infection.

In some cases, it could be recurrent ulcers on the epiglottis — a small but important structure that protects your airway during swallowing.

Dr. Kalpana Nagpal, ENT Specialist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, with over 27 years of experience in advanced ENT care.

🔎 What is the Epiglottis?

The epiglottis is a flap-like structure at the base of the tongue that prevents food from entering the airway while swallowing.

⚠️ Possible Causes of Recurrent Ulcers:

• Chronic infection (bacterial or viral)
• Acid reflux (LPR)
• Trauma or irritation
• Smoking or irritants
• Nutritional deficiencies
• Rarely, precancerous or serious conditions

🚨 Symptoms to Watch For:

• Persistent throat pain
• Painful swallowing (odynophagia)
• Sensation of something stuck in throat
• Voice changes
• Recurrent ulcers not healing

🩺 Why Early Evaluation is Important:

Recurrent ulcers should never be ignored. Proper ENT examination, including endoscopy, helps identify the exact cause and rule out serious conditions.

With timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment, most cases can be effectively managed and complications can be prevented.

🧠 Endoscopic CSF Leak Repair in a Patient with CSF Rhinorrhea

CSF Rhinorrhea occurs when cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks from the brain into the nasal cavity due to a defect in the skull base. Patients often notice a clear watery discharge from the nose, especially when bending forward, which should never be ignored.

In this case, the patient was diagnosed with CSF rhinorrhea and successfully treated with Endoscopic CSF Leak Repair — a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed through the nose.

🔬 What is Endoscopic CSF Leak Repair?

It is an advanced endoscopic procedure where the defect in the skull base is identified and sealed using specialized graft materials through a nasal endoscope.

🌿 Benefits of Endoscopic Repair:

• No external incision
• Precise repair of the leak site
• Faster recovery
• Reduced risk of complications such as meningitis

Early diagnosis and timely surgical treatment are crucial to prevent serious infections and protect brain health.

😴 From Severe Sleep Apnea to Restful Sleep — The Impact of Advanced Surgery

Before vs After results that truly transform a patient’s life.

This case highlights the remarkable improvement seen after in a patient suffering from .

Sleep apnea is a serious condition where the airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, leading to snoring, poor sleep quality, low oxygen levels, daytime fatigue, and long-term health risks.

📊 What the Sleep Study Showed

Before Surgery: • Frequent airway obstruction during sleep
• Multiple apnea episodes
• Disturbed sleep architecture
• Reduced oxygen levels
• Poor sleep efficiency

After TORS Surgery: ✔ Significant reduction in apnea episodes
✔ Improved oxygen saturation levels
✔ Better sleep quality and efficiency
✔ Marked improvement in overall breathing during sleep

🤖 Why TORS Makes a Difference

allows surgeons to precisely remove obstructing tissues in the throat using robotic assistance, improving the airway without external incisions.

This advanced approach can help patients with moderate to severe who do not respond adequately to CPAP therapy or medications.

🩺 The Key Message

A properly selected surgical intervention can dramatically improve breathing during sleep, restore healthy sleep patterns, and enhance overall quality of life.

Early diagnosis and expert evaluation are essential to determine the best treatment approach.

🌟 When the Right Diagnosis Changes a Child’s Life

A concerned father from Mumbai had been struggling for months to understand the reason behind his child’s poor health. The child was suffering from severe breathing difficulty and constant nasal blockage, and despite visiting several hospitals in Mumbai—including Lilavati Hospital—the family could not find a lasting solution.

Through word of mouth, the family came to know about Dr. Kalpana Nagpal, ENT specialist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi. Hoping for the right diagnosis, they travelled all the way to Delhi for consultation.

After a detailed ENT evaluation, the actual problem was identified. The child was suffering from complete blocked nose due to Gross DNS (Deviated Nasal Septum), multiple synechiae (internal nasal adhesions), and enlarged adenoids.

With the correct diagnosis and proper surgical management, the blockage was successfully treated. After treatment, the child’s breathing improved significantly.

आज बच्चा healthy, active और normal life में वापस आ चुका है, जिससे परिवार को बहुत राहत और खुशी मिली।

This case highlights how accurate diagnosis, specialized ENT care, and timely treatment can completely transform a child’s health and quality of life.

अगर आपके बच्चे को लगातार नाक बंद रहना, mouth breathing, snoring, या breathing difficulty हो रही है, तो समय पर ENT evaluation कराना बहुत ज़रूरी है।

🚨 Child Turns Blue While Crying? Don’t Ignore It.

If a child cries but produces very little sound — or turns blue during crying episodes — this may not be normal.

In some cases, it could indicate a congenital throat problem present since birth.

Namaste. I am Dr. Kalpana Nagpal, ENT Specialist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, with over 27 years of experience in advanced ENT care.

👶 What Could Be the Cause?

Certain congenital (birth-related) throat conditions can affect:

• The voice box (larynx)
• The airway
• Vocal cord movement
• Breathing coordination

When the airway is partially blocked or not functioning properly, a child may:

⚠️ Cry without sound (weak or absent cry)
⚠️ Turn bluish (cyanosis) while crying
⚠️ Have noisy breathing
⚠️ Show feeding difficulties
⚠️ Experience breathing distress

These signs require immediate medical evaluation.

🩺 Why Early Diagnosis is Important

Early detection helps:
✔ Protect the airway
✔ Prevent oxygen-related complications
✔ Support healthy growth and development
✔ Plan timely medical or surgical intervention if required

Most congenital throat conditions can be effectively managed with proper ENT evaluation, endoscopy, and guided treatment.

If your child shows unusual breathing patterns or color changes while crying, do not delay consultation.
