It’s been quite awhile since I’ve posted here on FB. Just wanting to provide a quick overview of what I do at ARC Fitness.

I’m both a personal trainer and Wellness coach.

As a trainer, my focus is on bringing clients to their fitness and/or weight loss goals. Each workout incorporates strength training for all muscle groups, with an emphasis on functional movement, core and balance. Most of my clients are over 50 years, with about a 50/50 balance of males/females. Sessions are either 30 minutes or a full hour and can be any combination of cardio and strength training.

As a Wellness Coach, I focus on improving overall quality of life and many aspects of health, especially those caused by metabolic conditions.

I help my clients make lifestyle changes and help them advocate for better healthcare with their physicians. Many clients, especially women, are dismissed or gas lit by their doctors. This does nothing to improve the quality of their lives or their overall health.

I review lab results and help my clients understand how to optimize their labs via better nutrition, exercise and sometimes, supplements. I also recommend additional lab testing to determine factors that can be contributing to symptoms and to their resistant metabolic weight loss or other health-related conditions. Most of these factors lie in hormonal imbalances and deficiencies. I can help optimize hormone levels. I draft reports that help clients advocate for support from their physicians, as most doctors know little to nothing about hormones, including thyroid.

Statin drugs: It’s all Smoke and Mirrors!

While it said that Statins reduce or block cholesterol, the fact is that Statins block the Mevalonate Pathway and by doing so cause the transfer of cholesterol from the bloodstream into organ and muscle cells. The blood cholesterol lowers, making labs appear to reflect a lowered cholesterol level.

Cells eventually die because Mevalonate, blocked by Statins, is essential to cell life and cell replication. Excess cholesterol forced into cells damages organ/muscle cells throughout the body. Excess cholesterol (minus Mevalonate) is toxic to cells.

Slow cell death begins. On paper your lipid profile may look better, but you haven't done anything to reduce your risk of Cardiovascular disease. You've just increased your chances of falling prey to very serious diseases including diabetes, autoimmune conditions and a host of other life changing “direct effects” of cholesterol lowering drugs.

There is no diet or exercise routine that will result in fat loss in this case. These hormones are key players in this scenario and must be brought into balance for your efforts to be successful. Unfortunately, most doctors do not test for hormonal imbalances. Their solution is typically to provide drugs to treat the multiple symptoms that occur and polypharmacy becomes the trend, where multiple drugs are prescribed to treat various conditions. Big Pharma profits, and patients lose and continue to suffer because the root cause wasn’t addressed.

Is this you: NEW FATIGUE? WEIGHT GAIN?? HAIR LOSS???

You may have thyroid disease and autoimmune Hashimotos if you’re experiencing some of these symptoms. Doctors rarely run a thorough thyroid panel, and when they do check thyroid they usually misdiagnose their patients, telling them that their thyroid labs are normal. If they do diagnose hypothyroidism, they typically prescribe a T4 medication like Synthroid. If you’re on Synthroid, you will probably still experience these symptoms because you’re not converting this hormone to the active T3 that would alleviate these symptoms. Instead, your body is making Reverse T3, which blocks active T3 from being available.

- fatigue/tiredness, regardless of quality of sleep/nutrition
- weight gain, regardless of best attempts at diet/exercise
- anxiety/depression that are unexplained, due to no reason
- being sensitive to the cold, regardless of temperature
- dry skin and hair, new hair loss, loss of eyebrows/eye lashes
- muscle aches and joint pain that lack a physical cause

Hypothyroidism has been correlated to an increased risk of breast cancer, (as well as several other cancers that are attributed to excess estrogen and/or low progesterone).

It is estimated that 20,000,000 Americans suffer from undiagnosed or under treated Hypothyroidism. In my own personal experience, I would have to say this applies to approximately half of my Wellness clients. Most of them had no idea that they had thyroid disease or low progesterone, as their doctors never picked it up in their physicals!

The association between hypothyroidism and cancer is due to Estrogen Dominance (and Progesterone Deficiency.)

Some steps you can take are:

Avoid Alcohol (increases blood estrogen levels)
Avoid Estrogen Treatment (supplemental estrogen)
Avoid Polyunsaturated Fats (increases estrogen's activity)
Avoid Radiation (mimics estrogen's effects on cells)

In hypothyroidism, your liver cannot detoxify estrogen, causing estrogen levels to rise.

At the same time your ability to produce progesterone declines as thyroid hormone (T3) levels drop and hormone resources shift to overproduce stress hormones.

So, when you suffer from hypothyroidism, you can quickly become both estrogen dominant and progesterone deficient, which is bad news for cancer.

The good news is that there are ways to fix this… ways to both "prevent and protect" yourself.

Have you ever felt like despite doing everything right, your body's just not the same once you hit your 50s?

Do you find yourself battling the scales even with tried-and-true methods from your past? Does the calories in vs. calories out equation no longer work? Are you cutting more calories and increasing cardio to try to push yourself into weight loss via a calorie deficit… but you’re still gaining weight?

I’ve been there, and I became very frustrating when I kept gaining weight, regardless of a clean diet of 1200 calories and daily exercise sessions. I was actually making things worse! I was literally destroying my metabolism in my exasperation to budge the number downward on my scale!

Fact: You can’t out-diet and out-exercise hormonal imbalances!

Once I figured this out, and I balanced my hormones, ALL of this new body fat came off - without any dietary restrictions or need for exhaustive workouts! Not only did it all come off, quickly, it Never returned! It’s been 8 years now, and maintaining balanced hormones has given me my life back.

As the evidence grows for the association of refined carbohydrate/sugar consumption with metabolic syndrome and obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer, why aren’t more health conscious people turning to low carb/low sugar diets as a normal healthy behavior?

Do you have any of these signs of Insulin Resistance? Many doctors just take a “Wait and See” approach, instead of advising their patients to become proactive. If your blood sugar markers for Insulin are greater than 6, you are in dangerous territory for this condition. Your Hemoglobin A1c should be between 4.8-5.1, and your fasting glucose should be between 85-95.

SYMPTOMS:
Abdominal obesity
Fatigue after meals
Sugar cravings
High triglycerides
Erectile dysfunction
Low HDL
High blood pressure
High blood sugar (diabetes)
Blood-clotting problems
