‼️ Check out this post from LinkedIn from Dr. Grammer, who is also a total joint surgeon ‼️
Seeing is Believing....Tomorrow is officially six weeks since my total knee. I'm actually shocked at how well I'm doing. If you saw me at AAHKS you may have noticed the limp. It was worsening leading up to the surgery and I somehow tweaked it on the Friday before surgery and had to use a cane to get around the weekend before. So, definitely time. ROSA showing a 19 degree flexion contracture under spinal, so that proves you can't objectively examine yourself as I would have guessed around 10.
The headline is not that I'm doing great after my knee replacement (I am), it's not that I went to back to work POD #27 (probably a little dumb - but I did not die).... It's that I have completely changed the way I look at knee replacement recovery and have completely changed my practice. For 20 years, I have been on a path of "more is better" and a near gym bro mentality towards physical therapy after joint replacement. Huge shout out to Andrew Wickline and his disruptive approach to recovery after knee replacement. I had ordered the book Less Swelling, Less Pain and it arrived shortly before AAHKS. I missed the Seminar he did at AAHKS but definitely heard the buzz it created. I hadn't even cracked the book yet. Shortly after Dallas, I dove in to the book and thought I would take a shot at Messaging Dr Wickline. I was totally surprised and excited when he wanted to talk. We talked or texted about 15 times. He even was gracious enough to zoom call his seminar for me to show me that data he has collected over the last ten years. He has checked on me no less than every week after my surgery and between the book, his advice and my results - I'm basically a Wickline disciple. The first picture of my knee is today POD #41. My knee is actually smaller than before surgery as the osteophytes are gone. I just finished a full clinic day and have minimal swelling. The next picture is at 10 days and the swelling is about the same. The Edema Wear lines are obvious I wore it every day nearly 24 hours - it works and is very comfortable.
Take home - Wickline's book is a game changer, I followed it with a lot of discipline. I'm thrilled with where I am today and it certainly could have been a lot worse. My knee was high risk as I have had 8 previous surgeries, with three longitudinal incisions ... my skin did great! One of these pictures is the 9th time my knee had been shaved for surgery!!
I was bending to 110 by POD 7. I'm not limping anymore (after a few steps). I took a total of four pain pills.
I had some extra time .... and I'm classic - so classic Batman car.
Thanks to Kris Hanby for his awesome surgical skills.
