We are pleased to announce that Eric Song, MD, PhD, has accepted a position as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Science and the Department of Immunobiology at the Yale School of Medicine, effective July 1, 2026. Dr. Song is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the two departments as of July 2025 and is serving as Chief Resident in his final year of the Yale Ophthalmology Residency Program. Dr. Songโs long-term plan is to specialize in ocular oncology while maintaining an active research laboratory at Yale on the unique immunology of the eye and the central nervous system in health and disease.
Dr. Song received his undergraduate training in biochemistry at the University of Southern California and went on to complete a masterโs degree in the laboratory of Dr. Justin Hanes at Johns Hopkins University, where he focused on the design of nanoparticles for gene and drug delivery into the brain. He then joined Dr. Mark Saltzman's lab at Yale University for post-baccalaureate training in biomedical engineering before entering the Yale Medical Scientist Training Program, earning both his MD and PhD. His doctoral research, conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Akiko Iwasaki, investigated the mechanisms behind differential immune responses in the brain compared to the rest of the body.
Dr. Songโs ongoing research is focused on understanding and manipulating immune responses in immune-privileged tissues, with the goal of developing novel therapies for diseases currently lacking effective treatments. His work reflects a unique and dynamic synergy between clinical training and scientific inquiry.
As part of his appointment in the Department of Immunobiology, Dr. Song will also hold a faculty position in the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, enabling him to mentor graduate students and contribute to the Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS) program.
Please join us in congratulating and welcoming Dr. Song to his new faculty role. His exceptional dedication to research, education, and clinical care will undoubtedly strengthen and elevate the missions of both departments.
