Congratulations to Dr. Terri Huynh and her team for completing the first Acessa procedure at Yale New Haven Hospital! The Acessa is a laparoscopic technique to shrink fibroids. It’s available to persons with bleeding or pain from fibroids who no longer desire fertility and want to preserve their uterus.

Monique Rainford MD, FACOG is a board-certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist with more than twenty years’ experience in general Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and completed her residency at Georgetown University Medical Center.

Dr. Rainford provides general Ob/Gyn care and one of her goals is eliminating health disparities for African American women. Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy- related cause than white women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“I have a passion to close the gap in these disparities, which are based on multiple issues related to racism and race-based inequities,” she says. “Among the things we hope to set up is surveying pregnant women about unseen barriers so that we can have better interventions.”

Dr. Rainford is also a public speaker and writer. She has written two books, “The Maternal Glow: A Jamaican Woman’s Guide to Pregnancy” and “Please God Send Me a Husband.”

Terri Huynh, MD, MSCR is a fellowship trained minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon.

Specializing in complex laparoscopic, robotic, and hysteroscopic surgery – she commonly evaluates and treats abnormal periods, pelvic pain, fibroids, endometriosis, and ovarian cysts.

“I want to ensure women are making well-informed decisions about their treatment options and feel empowered to feel better. I hope women leave my office feeling like they have been heard. We may not have an answer about what is causing your symptoms at the first visit, but we will set a plan in motion to figure it out with the goal to find a treatment option that works for you – whether that’s medicine or surgery.”

Originally from California, Dr. Huynh came to New Haven for medical school. She has since stayed on the east coast and completed her medical training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania followed by a fellowship in Delaware. She stayed as faculty there for several years prior to returning to Yale where she joins us in the Division of Gynecologic Specialties.

Normal pregnancies are carried in the uterus, also sometimes called a womb. An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that is not in the uterus.

If you notice pain or bleeding early in pregnancy AND you have not had an ultrasound confirming the pregnancy is IN the uterus, this can be concerning for an ectopic pregnancy. However, these can also be symptoms of a normal pregnancy or a miscarriage. Your doctor will likely get some bloodwork and check an ultrasound to determine where the pregnancy is located.

Sometimes ectopic pregnancies can be in the fallopian tube (between where an egg is created and where it is supposed to grow into a normal pregnancy). This accounts for more than 90% of cases of ectopic pregnancies.

Other times, the pregnancy may be on the o***y or somewhere else within the belly. Very rarely, they can be in the scar within the uterus from a cesarean delivery or within the cervix, which is the opening of the uterus or womb.

Are you breast aware?

Self breast examinations are no longer recommended in the average-risk woman. This is due to the risk of harm from unnecessary testing and evidence showing lack of benefit. However, you should be breast self-aware. This means being aware of your normal appearance and feel. Unlike performing your own exam at home, you should be alert your provider if you notice a new pain, asymmetry, ni**le discharge, or skin changes.

Am I at risk for endometrial cancer?

Endometrial cancer is the most commonly diagnosed gynecologic cancer. Luckily more than 70% of cases are caught early and the 5-year survival rate is 90%. This is because it often presents with symptoms early, specifically women will note postmenopausal bleeding or abnormal uterine bleeding.

Older age, obesity, tamoxifen use, PCOS, having no prior pregnancies, and certain genetic cancer mutations are risk factors for endometrial cancer.
