Words matter more than we think!

Stigmatizing language like “addict” or “relapse” can reinforce shame and keep people from getting the help they need. When we shift to person-first, compassionate language, we make recovery feel more possible—and more human.

Let’s change how we talk about substance use. Let’s choose words that heal, not harm.

Getting better isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s not always linear, and it doesn’t always look like what you might expect!

It can be quiet and personal. It can mean making it through one tough day, one tough hour, or one tough moment. It can look like rebuilding trust, establishing new routines, or simply learning how to be kind to yourself again.

At the APT Foundation, we believe getting better is possible—and it starts with recognizing that every small step matters!

💬 What does “getting better” mean to you? Let us know in the comments below, and share this post to help others feel seen in their own journey.

The earlier someone starts treatment, the better their chance of staying alive!

Medication isn’t a perfect solution—but it’s the best one we have. And when people get access to care early, they don’t just survive. They begin to thrive.

This is what compassionate, science-backed care looks like. This is how we save lives.

Stigma keeps people from getting the help they need—and we all have a role in breaking it down!

Whether it’s the words we use, the stories we share, or the compassion we show, small actions can lead to big change.

The APT Foundation joined community members, healthcare providers, and advocates on the New Haven Green to honor Overdose Awareness Day—a powerful reminder that behind every statistic is a person, a story, and a family!

Our team provided free health screenings, trained attendees in overdose response using naloxone, and offered educational resources to reduce stigma and save lives.

Together, we’re working toward a future where help is accessible, stigma is dismantled, and recovery is possible!

What happens when we let silence decide what’s “normal”?

Stigma thrives.
People suffer.
And the systems meant to support us turn into barriers instead.

At APT, we believe justice starts with truth — even when it’s uncomfortable.

That’s why we speak up, challenge stigma, and create open access to treatment for anyone ready to begin healing!

Let’s stop waiting for consensus. Let’s build change instead.

Share this if you believe recovery should never be out of reach!

What if getting life-saving care was as simple as walking through the door?!

At APT Foundation, it is.

Six days a week, anyone can walk in—no insurance, no referral, no red tape—and leave the very same day with a full evaluation and, if they choose, life-saving medication for opioid use disorder.

This is what accessible care looks like in action. This is how we break barriers!

Today, we remember. And we act.

Each life lost to overdose was a person with dreams, loved ones, and a future that should’ve been possible!

Overdose is preventable—and so much of what stands in the way is stigma.

Let’s replace judgment with compassion. Barriers with access. Silence with truth.

Join us in honoring the lives we’ve lost by fighting for the lives we can still save! 💙

Mission Statement

Founded in 1970, the APT Foundation’s mission is to promote the health and recovery for those who live with substance use disorders and/or mental illness.

Vision

It is the philosophy of the APT Foundation that the disease of addiction must be treated in a holistic way. It is our belief that addiction is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit, affecting a person’s social and emotional functioning, and that treatment must address all of these needs.
