Regular Pap tests and routine STD screening can be key to maintaining your general and sexual health.

✅ A Pap test, along with a pelvic exam, is an important part of routine healthcare. It can help find abnormal cells that can lead to cancer. Your healthcare provider can find most cancers of the cervix early if you have regular Pap tests and pelvic exams.

✅ Many STDs don't cause any symptoms so the only way to know for sure if you have an STD is to get tested. Some curable STDs can be dangerous if they aren't treated. For example, if left untreated, chlamydia and gonorrhea can make it difficult—or even impossible—for a woman to get pregnant later in life.

These screens are routine and safe. If you have any questions about what the tests entail or want to schedule an appointment, call us at 203.562.5181 or visit the Gynecology Services page at our website at https://bit.ly/4c1nX2q.

The first full week in June is Community Health Improvement Week, which honors health professionals for the work they do in their communities. We would like to recognize our own Dr. Rebecca Pringle for her work in support of the CT Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CCADV).

Rebecca was among CCADV's First 100 Plus Class of 2023, a list comprised of a range of professionals who have demonstrated leadership and commitment to improving the lives of domestic violence survivors in Connecticut. To learn more about CCADV and its mission to improve Connecticut’s response to domestic violence by changing the systems that impact the lives of survivors, visit their website: https://www.ctcadv.org/.

A key part of a prenatal visit program is testing. Core tests include:

☑️ Initial Blood Tests. The initial prenatal labs include a blood count, a blood type, and RH status.
☑️ Ultrasounds. We generally perform two medically indicated ultrasounds during the first and second trimesters.
☑️ Glucose Tests. Between 26 and 28 weeks, we will check your blood count, offer an HIV test, check again for syphilis (as required by Connecticut state law), and perform a glucose screening test for gestational diabetes.
☑️ Group B Strep Tests. We test all pregnant women at 36 weeks for Group B streptococcus (GBS) using a vaginal swab.

There are other optional tests for both the mother and baby to identify genetic indicators and other potential issues.

To learn more about prenatal programming at CT Coastal OB/GYN, check out the CT Pregnancy Services page at our website: https://bit.ly/4bvLZlX.

If left untreated, Human papillomavirus (HPV) can have devastating effects, including ge***al warts and several forms of cancer. While HPV is exceptionally common, uncertainty still surrounds it. HPV is a virus that causes an infection by entering cells. It then takes control of your inner cells, replicates itself, and then infects other nearby cells, moving quickly through the body. There are over 100 strains of the virus, with at least 30 affecting female ge***als.

Your immune system can naturally shed the virus, but it can’t always be cleared. HPV is dangerous, but there are preventive steps you can take, including a highly effective vaccination. To learn more, read our blog "Understanding—and Preventing—HPV" at [LINK TBD].

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

Skin Cancer Awareness Month encourages us to learn preventive skincare habits and seek screenings for early intervention. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and it's also one of the most preventable. More than 6 million Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year, with basal and squamous cell cancers the most common, while melanoma is the most aggressive. Regardless of cancer type, if detected early, treatment is generally highly effective. Wearing sun protection, either in the form of clothing or broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen, and seeking shade when outdoors is the first line of defense. Knowing your moles is another line of defense and how to spot a change in your skin helps in early detection.

If you’re experiencing a new spot on your skin, changes in size, shape, or color of existing spots, an itchy or painful spot, a non-healing sore, red or skin-colored spots, or red, rough or scaly spots, those might be early signs of skin cancer. Speak with your primary care provider about screening as soon as possible. Early detection means speedier, more effective treatment.

Regular gynecology care, including disease prevention and early detection of abnormalities, is especially important for teens. Routine care helps adolescent patients and doctors discuss menstrual difficulties, contraception, hormone therapies, fertility concerns, problems with sexuality or intimacy, and other issues.

At CT Coastal OB/GYN, we work to create supportive relationships and to understand every patient's unique healthcare needs, so that we can develop appropriate treatment plans. Learn more about our Adolescent Gynecology Services here: https://bit.ly/3UbVG39.

Since the advent of the pandemic, telemedicine, also called telehealth, has steadily grown and become more accepted. Research shows that more than 92% of patients believe that telemedicine has made it easier to manage their health. On the other hand, nearly 80% of medical facilities and providers use some form of telehealth technology. While telemedicine can help with a wide range of women's health needs, it's not right for every condition or issue. To learn how to make the most of telemedicine's benefits, read our "Telemedicine Pros and Cons" blog, here https://bit.ly/4atwxXp.

March is Endometriosis Awareness Month. Research estimates that endometriosis affects one in 10 women. While it’s among the most common gynecological diseases, endometriosis can go undetected for years because the abdominal or pelvic pain associated with the condition is often mistaken for menstrual cramps or because there may be no symptoms. On average, women suffer from endometriosis for 10 years before receiving a proper diagnosis.

To learn more about the disease and treatment, check out https://bit.ly/3sqo28Q. If you have any questions for your healthcare provider about abdominal pain you may be experiencing or want to schedule an appointment, call us today at (203) 562-5181.
