The first peds IR teaching visit to Uganda 🇺🇬 by Dr. John Adu 🇬🇧 is going very well. As we are concluding the first week we can reflect on several new procedures performed, including the first percutaneous sclerotherapy of a lymphatic malformation in country. Dr. Adu is providing great teaching and outreach to other departments. This is how you build a peds IR service from the ground up!

Great meeting with the new director of MNH: Professor Janabi. We are very thankful for his support! Having built a very successful cardiology program at JKCI, he understands what it takes to make minimally invasive procedures more accessible. We are looking forward to working with him over the next several years in expanding IR services in Tanzania!

Also big thanks 🙏 to team Germany 🇩🇪 from .lmu and Uni Münster! Many big cases on small patients completed over the past two weeks. While the lack of adult IR globally is certainly an issue, the near complete lack in peds IR in particular in Africa is even more upsetting. Unfortunately there is very little action from societies and equipment companies to change this, so it comes down to individuals like Professor Wildgruber and his team from .muenchen volunteering their time and expertise, working with our team in Tanzania 🇹🇿. Let’s hope that with more awareness there will be more action going forward 💪

Not possible? Not acceptable!

Yesterday, the first TIPS (Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt) was placed in Rwanda 🇷🇼 in a patient with recurrent hematemesis due to portal hypertension in the setting of liver cirrhosis.

Teamwork makes the dream work. Hepatologists, anesthesiologists, nurses, technologists and interventional radiologists came together to make this happen!

Oct 2021 - Oct 2022 🗓️

It has been exactly 1 year since the launch of IR services at Rwanda 🇷🇼 Military Hospital. The team has grown from 1 person to 6 full time IR staff (1 IR, 1 Nurse navigator, 3 IR nurses in training, 1 IR Tech).

Many thanks 🙏 to the administration, MOH, , , and all partners that keep to support the Rwanda IR Program!
