Yale Undergraduate Mindfulness

Yale Undergraduate Mindfulness Come teach stress management and promote mental wellbeing in New Haven schools! It also trains and supports Yale undergraduates to deliver these workshops.

The Yale Undergraduate Mindfulness Education Initiative (YUMEI) is a student group looking to address a gap in health education in local schools by teaching students how to maintain their mental health in addition to their physical health. The initiative aims to empower these students, through workshops, by equipping them with tools and knowledge to mindfully deal with stress and other difficult situations.

Name: Luisa

Class year: 2020

Major: Political Science and Psychology

Involvement in YUMEI: Training Coordinator

Why you joined YUMEI: I started practicing meditation at the end of high school, and when I came to Yale, I was hoping to find a community that shared this interest. Mindfulness has had a huge impact on how I live my life and I love to share it with others!

What mindful things you do: A corner of my dorm room is dedicated to mindfulness! I leave out good ol' poetry books, (fake) candles, and lavender tea. I love to sit there between classes or before studying and just mindfully exist!

Name: Anna Thorndike

Class year: 2020

Major: Cognitive Science (prospective)

Involvement in YUMEI: Treasurer, Teacher

Why you joined YUMEI: I joined YUMEI hoping that I could improve my own ability to manage stress and live in the present moment through teaching mindfulness to other people. Is my plan working? I think so, albeit slowly. I still get stressed and anxious about things in my life, but I like to think less than I used to. And every day I am getting better at appreciating each day as I live it.

What mindful things you do: hiking, yoga, running, baking, talking to all the fantastic people in my life 🙂

Name: Erin Wang

Class year: 2018

Major: Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry

Involvement in YUMEI (teacher or board position, if you have one): Co-president 2016-17

Why you joined YUMEI: I discovered mindfulness my freshman year, and I wish that someone had taught me about it when I was in high school. Mindfulness has completely changed the way I see the world. Without it, I don't think I'd be as happy and grateful as I am to be here today. And YUMEI has introduced me to some of the kindest and funniest people I know. :)

What mindful things you do:
yoga, running, cooking, hiking

Major: Psychology (neuroscience track)

Involvement in YUMEI : Co-president

Why you joined YUMEI: I joined YUMEI as a freshman after listening to a sexual health workshop and wanting to do the same thing but for mental health. I think mindfulness is an incredible tool to accomplish this goal, as it is accessible, simple, and just works!

What mindful things you do: I'm big on mindful running, there's something very meditative about just putting one foot in front of the other.

Happy Teacher Thursday!!

Name: Abe Shim

Class year: MC '20

Major: Undeclared, but most likely Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry

Involvement in YUMEI: Classroom Coordinator

Why you joined YUMEI: Life can be really stressful and fast-paced. As a high school student, I often had a hard time fully appreciating things until they have long passed. I wanted to enjoy my college experience to the fullest by learning to appreciate what I have right now, in the present moment. I love organizing and teaching workshops with high school and middle school students, because I know it would have greatly benefitted me if I had known about mindfulness back then.

What mindful things you do: Mindful coffee-drinking is one of my favorite pastimes. I like to visit new coffee shops and take in the decor, the people, the atmosphere, and the smell of fresh ground coffee.

Hi Yalies!! Mindful Monday is back!!

What are you grateful for?

Writing down what we are grateful for---from things as big as life to things as small as finding our favorite tea in the dining hall--can have a profound effect on our well-being and relationships!

If you can, find 15 minutes each day this week and write down up to five things for which you feel grateful!

Count your blessings and enjoy better health and happiness.
